ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will wrap up 2020 by hosting back-to-back Big South games against Longwood on Wednesday and Thursday. Both games are scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
Last Time Out – The Bulldogs fell on the road at High Point in their last time out, 77-63. The loss pushed Asheville's record to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in league action.
1,000 Point Watch – Senior Nadiria Evans is on the doorstep of joining an exclusive club in UNC Asheville women's basketball history. Evans, who is averaging a league-best 20.3 points per game, needs just two more points to become the 22nd player in program history to reach this milestone.
Defense, Defense, Defense – The Bulldogs notched their first conference victory of the season on December 19 at High Point, defeating the Panthers 63-54. The low point total against High Point continues a trend for Asheville when it comes to defense. Since the start of last season, the Bulldogs are 16-3 when holding their opponents to 60 points or fewer.
30 Point Game – Another big key in the Bulldogs win over High Point was the play of Evans in that contest. The senior from Gainesville, Florida, netted a career-high 34 points, including a 14-for-15 effort from the free throw line in the victory. The 34-point outburst is the most of any Big South player this season and the first 30-point performance by a Bulldog since Sonora Dengokl scored 36 points on January 15, 2019, against USC Upstate.
Big South Success at Home – Wednesday and Thursday will be the first Big South games for the Bulldogs at home this season. Asheville has built up a stellar home-court advantage against its conference foes recently. Since the start of the 2017-18 season, the Bulldogs have won 64 percent of their games at home against league opponents, and they have finished with a .500 record or better in each season.
About Longwood – Longwood will bring a three-game winning streak into Kimmel Arena on Wednesday. During this stretch, the Lancers have knocked off Radford twice (91-60, 84-55) and Howard (89-78). Longwood enters its matchup with the Bulldogs as one of just two teams in the Big South to still have an undefeated record in conference play (2-0) with Charleston Southern (2-0) being the other. Sitting at a 3-4 record overall, the Lancers lead the Big South in scoring offense (76.3 PPG) and blocks (5.3 BPG).
Series Rewind vs. Longwood – The series history between the Bulldogs and Lancers is relatively small compared to others within the conference. Asheville has won 13 of the 20 meetings, including the first matchup back in the 2004-05 season. However, Longwood won both games between the two programs last season by scores of 73-56 and 54-51.
How to Follow – Fans can watch both games via ESPN+. Mike Gore will have the radio call on Rewind 100.3, and live stats will also be available here.
