UNC Asheville Concludes Homestand With 10-3 Loss

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To cap off the five-game homestand for the Bulldogs, the UNC Asheville baseball team fell 10-3 to USC Upstate on Tuesday night at Greenwood Field.
Brandon Lankford posted a team-high three hits, which matches a single-game career high for the sophomore. Of the three total hits, two were doubles, which also matches a single-game career-high mark.
BULLDOG BITES
Highlights
USC Upstate worked quickly to start the game, as it connected with a pair of hits in its first three at-bats. The Spartans forced the bases loaded with one out, but UNC Asheville starting pitcher, Danny Wilson, got out of the jam with a strikeout and fly out.
In the top of the second, the Spartans struck for a trio of runs, as Pat Raiff tallied a two-RBI triple and Charlie Carpenter earned a RBI single.
The Bulldogs tried to tally their first run of the contest in the home half of the second, but two Bulldogs were left stranded.
USC Upstate tacked on two runs in the top of the third, as it advanced the lead to 5-0. Will Haridgree poked a RBI single, and Chris Rodriguez matched with a RBI single of his own.
After holding the Spartans scoreless in the top of the fourth, the Bulldog offense plated its first run of the game in the bottom of the frame. Gruszka earned a single to second base, and he advanced on a throwing error by the Spartan second baseman. Following a strikeout, Lankford earned a RBI double, which made the game 5-1.
The Spartan offense erupted for a four-run fifth inning to advance its lead to 9-1. Toran Shahidi connected with a solo home run to start the inning, and the Spartans ended the inning by scoring three runs, two of which were unearned.
Despite being down 9-1, UNC Asheville posted two runs in the sixth stanza. Carmine Pagano reached base via a fielding error, and Jake Madole put two runners on base with a single to center. Lankford made it hurt, as he smacked his second RBI hit of the game. With runners at the corners, pinch-hitter Tyler Serricchio scored Madole with a groundout to first base, which made the contest 9-3.
Neither team could record a hit in the seventh inning, but the Bulldogs nearly scored in the home half of the seventh. Joe Zayatz and Pagano each reached base safely on a walk and a hit by pitch. However, the Spartans ended the threat with a fly out to strand the two Bulldogs.
To cap off the mid-week victory for USC Upstate, the Spartans tacked on one more run in the ninth inning to seal the 10-3 victory.
Offensively, two Bulldogs – Lankford and Madole – posted a multi-hit performance. Lankford posted three hits, and Madole connected with two singles and touched home twice. Gruszka and Jake Catalano rounded out the hits for the Bulldogs, as they each collected a single.
Jesse Juday, Beau Nichols and Ethan Tressler each posted an inning of relief, where the Bulldog trio combined for four strikeouts, no walks and no runs scored.
The Bulldogs drop to 9-23 overall, and the Spartans move to 16-18-1 on the year.

UNC Asheville travels to Longwood for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 13.
