Bulldogs Drop Series Opener at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood was able to withstand a UNC Asheville comeback attempt in the ninth inning to take a 3-0 game one win over the Bulldogs at Buddy Bolding Stadium on Friday, April 13.
BULLDOG BITES
Highlights
Longwood (11-21, 4-9 Big South Conference) scored its first two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lancers would plate another in the bottom of the sixth to take the 3-0 advantage. One inning earlier, the Bulldogs (9-24, 5-8 Big South Conference) had loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to score.
The top of the ninth would open with two straight strikeouts to leave the Bulldogs down to their final out.
After a walk to Danny Wilson gave the Bulldogs a runner aboard with two outs, Joe Zayatz singled through the right side to give UNC Asheville runners at first and second.
Carmine Pagano was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a Longwood pitching change, Joe Gruszka would ground out to the first baseman to end the game.
Longwood narrowly out-hit the Bulldogs, 6-4, in the game.
Four different Bulldogs collected a hit in Wilson, Zayatz, Pagano and Brandon Lankford.
Antwaun Tucker led Longwood with two hits and two RBIs.
Longwood starting pitcher Steven Farkas improved to 2-6 on the season with his victory on the mound.
Michael Catlin got the aforementioned final out for the Lancers to collect his third save of the season.
UNC Asheville starting pitcher Greg Gasparro (1-5) struck out five in five innings on the hill. Blake Brown dealt three innings in relief of Gasparro. He fanned four.
What's Next
Due to the threat of inclement weather in the area on Sunday, UNC Asheville and Longwood will now play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game of the twinbill slated to get underway at 2 p.m.
