UNC Asheville Drops Doubleheader at Longwood

04.14.2018 | Baseball

FARMVILLE, Va. – Despite nearly earning a come-from-behind victory in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday, the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped both games at Longwood, 15-12 and 5-0.

BULLDOG BITES

Game One Highlights

Longwood jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first two innings. Four different Lancers tallied a RBI hit to give them the first lead of the game.

The Bulldogs quickly knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the third inning. Carmine Pagano connected with a two-RBI single to start the rally. Danny Wilson followed with a RBI double, and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, Brandon Lankford poked a RBI single through the left side to amount to the four-run inning.

The Lancers quickly retaliated in the home half of the third, as they tacked on three runs.

The Lancers added a lone run in the bottom of fourth to move the lead to 8-4. However, the Bulldogs pulled within two runs in the top of the sixth, as Jake Madole smacked a two-RBI double to left field.

The Longwood offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth, which extended its lead to 14-6.

Despite being down eight, the Bulldogs out-scored the Lancers 6-1 in the final three innings, including a five-run ninth inning. In the final frame, Madole connected with a RBI base knock, and Kole Harris earned a RBI, as he walked with the bases loaded. Andrew Friedholm made it hurt, as he smacked a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to left. The Bulldogs continued to put pressure on the Lancers in the ninth, as Pagano tallied a single to left with two outs. However after a pitching change, the Lancers sealed the 15-12 win by striking out the final batter.

Madole posted a strong performance in game one, as the infielder connected with a pair of hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Andrew Friedholm matched his teammate, as the catcher tallied a trio of RBIs. Pagano, Wilson and Lankford all posted a pair of base hits, while they each earned at least one RBI and a run scored.

Game Two Highlights

Game two of the doubleheader was a pitching duel from the beginning. UNC Asheville starting pitcher Jordan Carr and Longwood starter Tyler Morgan battled from first pitch.

In fact, in five different innings neither teams plated a run in the contest. The first three innings went scoreless between both clubs, as both Asheville and Longwood combined for only three hits.

The 0-0 tie was broken in the fourth frame, as Nate Blakeney of Longwood connected with a solo, leadoff home run.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Longwood tripled its lead with a two-run home run from Antwaun Tucker.

The pitching duel continued, as neither team tallied a hit for a span of two-and-a-half innings.

The Lancers tacked on two more runs in the eighth with a two-out home run from Justin Mitchell. The third home run of the game ultimately sealed the 5-0 victory for Longwood.

Greg Gasparro had an outstanding game for Asheville, as the sophomore poked a pair of hits in three at-bats. Joe Zayatz connected with the third team hit for the Bulldogs.

Carr twirled four innings against the Lancers, where he struck out four batters and scattered four hits. Eric Whitecavage worked three innings, where he struck out three batters in his outing.

With the two losses, UNC Asheville drops to 9-26 overall and 5-10 in the Big South, and Longwood moves to 13-21 overall and 6-9 in league play.
