UNC Asheville’s Bats Explode for 18 Hits En Route To Dominant 20-7 Win at Home

03.30.2018 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –  The UNC Asheville baseball team pounded 18 hits, as the Bulldogs handed Campbell its first Big South Conference loss of the season, 20-7, on Friday night at Greenwood Field.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

The UNC Asheville offense worked quickly in game two of the series, as it exploded for six first-inning runs to start the game. Highlighting the dominating inning was back-to-back two RBI hits from redshirt sophomore Jake Madole and sophomore Tyler Serricchio. Kole Harris and Serricchio also touched home to account for the six-run frame.

Campbell made it a one-run contest in the top of the second, as it struck for four hits. Tyler Anshaw connected with a bases-clearing double, and he eventually scored on a Matthew Barefoot single to pull within one run, 6-5.

The Bulldogs took advantage of several Camel miscues, as they tacked on two more runs in the home half of the second frame. Carmine Pagano scored on a wild pitch, and Joe Gruszka touched home on a balk.

Two innings later, Bryce Myers connected with a one-out double to cut the Campbell deficit to two runs, 8-6.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs worked some one-out magic to blow the game wide open. Gruszka started the rally with a single. Brandon Lankford followed with a single, and Madole forced the bases loaded with a hit by pitch. Serricchio earned a five-pitch walk to score Gruszka, and Danny Wilson jumped on the second pitch he saw to bring home Lankford from third. Chris Troost jumped in on the action, as the sophomore tallied a two-RBI double. To cap off the inning, Harris demolished the first pitch he saw, as he smoked a three-run home run off the building in left field. After a Campbell pitching change, the Bulldogs posted two more hits, but they were left stranded. However, Asheville was holding a commanding 15-6 lead after four frames.

The following inning, the Bulldogs posted four insurance runs, as Serricchio, Joe Zayatz, Pagano and Gruszka all earned an RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Both squads exchanged a run in the sixth inning, which brought the score to 20-7. In the seventh inning, both teams threatened to score more runs, but both squads left a pair of runners on base.

Both teams went in order to conclude the game, which sealed the 20-7 victory for the Bulldogs.

The last time the Bulldogs scored 20 or more runs was a 22-9 victory at home versus Presbyterian during the 2016 season.

On Friday, Asheville recorded a season-high 18 hits en route to a 13-run victory, which was also a season-high. In total, the Bulldogs pounded out five extra-base hits. Madole connected with a pair of doubles, and Troost posted two doubles in Friday's contest. Harris connected with the lone Asheville home run, which was his second of the season.

Three Bulldogs – Gruszka, Wilson and Troost - earned three hits each in the game. Harris, Gruszka, Madole, Serricchio and Wilson all touched home three times, while Pagano scored twice. Serricchio and Harris each had a game-high four RBIs, and Troost followed with a trio of RBIs.

As a team, the Bulldogs walked 11 times and stole three bases.

Eric Whitecavage was the first reliever for the Bulldogs, and the junior recorded 2.2 innings and allowed just one run on one hit. The right-handed pitcher earned the victory, which was his second of the season. Jordan Fulbright was nearly perfect, as he twirled five innings. He scattered two hits and allowed one unearned run. He also struck out four batters on 77 total pitches. He earned the save, which was his first career save.

With the 13-run victory, the Bulldogs move to 7-18 overall and 4-4 in the Big South Conference. Campbell drops to 14-13 overall, as it was pinned with its first conference loss of the season (7-1).
