Baseball Hosts First Big South Conference Series Beginning on Thursday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Hosting its first Big South Conference series of the season, the UNC Asheville baseball teams entertains Campbell with a three-game set beginning on Thursday, March 29 at 4 p.m. at Greenwood Field.

Friday: So. LHP Greg Gasparro (1-3, 4.70 ERA) vs. R-Sr. RHP Allan Winans (2-3, 1.67 ERA)

Saturday: Sr. RHP Nick Boyles (0-0, 3.86 ERA) vs. Sr. RHP Wes Noble (3-2, 4.96 ERA)

Sunday:  R-So. LHP Jordan Carr (2-2, 5.40 ERA) vs. Jr. RHP Michael Horrell (3-1, 1.84 ERA)

Series Promotions

Thursday: March 29 will be Freshman Night, where we invite all UNC Asheville freshmen to join us for special activities at Greenwood Field. We'll also be highlighting all our freshmen on the team throughout the contest. The game will also be Glen Arden Elementary School Takeover Day, where students, faculty and staff will receive free admission to the series opener.

Friday: March 30 will serve as Little League Night. Kids that participate in local little league baseball will receive free admission to the game, and throughout UNC Asheville's game versus the Camels, there will be games and activities to participate in.

Saturday: March 31 will be Youth Sports Saturday. All kids that wear their youth sports jersey will receive free admission to the series finale versus Campbell. With Easter being on Sunday, April 1, UNC Asheville Athletics will be hosting its first-ever Easter Egg Hunt, and all kids are encouraged to look around the ballpark for Easter Eggs and keep the prizes inside. 

About the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville hosts its first conference series of the season with a 6-17 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Big South play. In their last 10 games, the Bulldogs are a respectable 4-6.

In its last game, the Bulldogs fell 12-4 to ETSU on Tuesday on the road. Carmine Pagano and Jake Madole each posted a two-hit game. The duo also combined for both extra-base hits for Asheville, as Madole connected with a solo homer and Pagano tallied a double. Kole Harris had the third RBI for the Bulldogs in the mid-week, as he recorded a sacrifice fly.

Jesse Juday and Jordan Fulbright had the best outings out of the bullpen for Asheville at ETSU. They each twirled an inning and also posted a strikeout.

In the last five games, Pagano and Danny Wilson have led the offensive surge for the Bulldogs. Pagano has a team-leading .400 batting average, as he has connected with eight hits. Of those hits, three went for doubles. Wilson posted seven base knocks and touched home twice. Madole appeared in five games, including one start, and connected with three hits in five at-bats. Of those three hits, two went for home runs.

Scouting the Camels

Campbell enters the three-game series with a 13-12 overall record and a 6-0 mark in league play. In its last 10 contests, Campbell is an impressive 7-3 with series wins over William & Mary, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb.

Christian Jones, who has appeared in all 25 games this year, has a team-leading .341 batting average. He also leads the team in hits (31), home runs (7), RBIs (27), total bases (57) and slugging percentage (.626). Zach Minnick, who has started 20 of the 25 games, has a .320 batting average. He paces the squad with six doubles. Matthew Barefoot is the third Camel that is hitting over .300 with a .306 clip. He has 26 total hits, as six have gone for extra bases.

The Bulldogs will face strong starting pitching this weekend. Headlining the starting pitching rotation is Allan Winans and Michael Horrell. Both Camels have a sub-2.00 ERA and have twirled at least 27 total innings this year. Winans has a 1.67 ERA in five starts, and he has struck out 37 batters and limits oppo­nents to a .204 batting average. Horrell has a 3-1 record with a 1.84 ERA. He has started six games and has allowed just six earned runs in 29.1 innings of work.

Out of the bullpen, the Camels have two quality relievers in Logan Bender and Tyson Messer. Bender has a 2-0 record with a 1.37 ERA. He has tossed 19.2 innings and has fanned 28 batters. Messer has a 2.63 ERA and limits opponents to a .217 batting average.
