Highlights
Both teams posted a quiet first inning, but in the second frame, Campbell struck for three runs to take the three-run lead. The Camels took advantage of two walks, a hit by pitch and a single to give them the first lead of the contest.
The Bulldogs earned their first baserunner of the contest in the second inning with a Brandon Lankford hit by pitch. After a strikeout, Joe Zayatz drew a five-pitch walk to put two runners on, but the pair were left stranded.
UNC Asheville starting pitcher Greg Gasparro really settled on the mound for the next two innings. During that stretch, the left-handed pitcher posted a 1-2-3 third inning and only surrendered one hit in the top of the fourth.
The Bulldogs couldn't capitalize on the quiet Camel offense, as Asheville was held scoreless during that two-inning stretch.
In the top of the fifth, Campbell posted a lone run to take a 4-0 lead.
The Bulldogs tried to rally in the home-half of the fifth, as Danny Wilson started the frame with a leadoff double to right field. Wilson was able to move to third base on a passed ball, but he was thrown out at home on the next at-bat.
The Camels tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh. Matthew Barefoot led off the frame with a triple, and he later scored on a teammate's double. Jeff Hahs connected with the third extra-base hit of the frame, which brought the score to 6-0. In the same inning, the Camels recorded one more run to take the 7-0 lead.
The UNC Asheville offense earned its first run of the contest, as Zayatz posted his second walk of the game to start the seventh inning. He moved to third thanks to a balk and a wild pitch. The senior touched home a pitch later, as the Campbell starting pitcher was tabbed with a wild pitch.
Despite being up 7-1 in the top of the ninth, Campbell scored three more runs in the final inning, as they connected with a pair of hits.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Jake Madole earned a four-pitch walk. He eventually moved to second on a ground out, but the Camels posted the final out of the game to seal the 10-1 victory on Thursday.
Three different Bulldogs - Carmine Pagano, Madole and Wilson - recorded a hit in the contest. Wilson earned the lone extra-base hit for Asheville, which was a double off the right-field fence. Zayatz had a team-high two walks, as he scored Asheville's lone run.
Hunter Burnette had a solid outing out of the bullpen, as the freshman worked 1.1 innings. He didn't allow a hit or run in the conference home opener.
The Bulldogs fall to 6-18 overall and 3-4 in the Big South Conference, and Campbell advances to 14-12 overall and 7-0 in league play.
