Madole, Lankford Combine for Four RBIs in Series Finale Loss to Campbell

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite Jake Madole and Brandon Lankford combining for four RBIs on Saturday, the UNC Asheville baseball team fell 9-5 to Campbell in the series finale at Greenwood Field.

Highlights
For the first time in the series, Campbell plated a run in a first inning, as Christian Jones connected with a one-out sacrifice fly to right field.
The Bulldogs quickly retaliated in the home half of the first, as they posted a pair of runs. Joe Zayatz posted a one-out single, and following a Joe Gruszka walk, Zayatz and Gruszka advanced 90 feet thanks to a wild pitch. Redshirt sophomore Madole capitalized with a two-RBI single to left center.
After a three up and three down inning for Campbell, Kole Harris laid down a perfectly-executed sacrifice bunt to give the Bulldogs the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
After a 1-2-3 for both teams in the third, Jones made it only a one-run deficit in the top of the fourth, as he connected with a one-out solo home run to right field.
In the top of the fifth, the Camels took advantage of a leadoff hit by pitch, as Bryce Myers plated the base runner with a RBI single up the middle. The RBI base knock tied the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Zayatz and Gruszka each drew a walk. However, Zayatz was called out on a double play, and Gruszka was left stranded after swiping second base.
Still tied at 3-all, the Camels struck for three runs in the top of the sixth frame. Jones connected with his second home run of the game, which was a two-run homer. Myers posted a sacrifice fly, which gave his team the 6-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lankford, who came in to pinch hit for Chris Troost, demolished a two-run home run to right field. The sophomore's bomb was his sixth of the season and brought the game to 6-5.
The Camels threatened to extend their one-run lead in the top of the seventh, as they put two runners in scoring position, but Eric Whitecavage forced the final batter to fly out to keep the deficit at one run.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, UNC Asheville had a prime opportunity to gain its second lead of the game. Cody Wilson drew a four-pitch walk, and Lankford was hit by a pitch to put two Bulldogs on base. Andrew Friedholm was also hit by a pitch with two outs, but Carmine Pagano popped out with the bases loaded for the final out of the frame.
Campbell tacked on three insurance runs in the final inning, as it earned two hits, a hit by pitch and an intentional walk.
In the bottom of the inning, Danny Wilson tried to start a two-out rally with a single to right center, but Matthew Barefoot forced Anthony Cuozzi to ground out into a fielder's choice.
Lankford had a clutch pinch-hit home run, as he finished the contest going 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Madole matched his teammate, as he also earned two RBIs in the series finale. Harris earned the final RBI for the Bulldogs. Gruszka and Cody Wilson each earned a game-high three walks, while Zayatz earned a pair of walks. Tyler Serricchio earned the second extra-base hit of the contest, as he connected with a double.
Jesse Juday and Whitecavage had scoreless outings on Saturday, as they combined for an innings of work. Hunter Burnette allowed one run in his one inning of relief.
With the series finale loss, UNC Asheville falls to 7-19 overall and 4-5 in Big South Conference play. Campbell moves to 15-13 overall and 8-1 in league play.

UNC Asheville and USC Upstate square off in Spartanburg, S.C. on Tuesday, April 3. First pitch is slated for a 6 p.m.
