ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will play two games this week, as the Bulldogs travel to USC Upstate on Tuesday, April 3, and play host to Western Carolina on Wednesday, April 4, in the annual Vs. Cancer game at McCormick Field.

Projected Starters

Tuesday: Fr. RHP Beau Nichols (0-1, 5.06 ERA) vs. Jr. RHP Jacob Thiessen (1-4, 5.53 ERA)

Wednesday: Jr. RHP Danny Wilson (0-1, 13.09 ERA) vs. Sr. LHP Corey Sikes (0-1, 8.03 ERA) 

About the Bulldogs

UNC Asheville enters the two mid-week games with a 7-19 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the Big South Conference. In its last 10 games though, Asheville is a respectable 4-6 with wins over Campbell, Liberty and Radford.

In its four games last week, the Bulldogs posted 33 total hits and scored 30 runs. Leading the offen­sive surge in the last four games was Danny Wilson and Jake Madole. The duo each connected with six hits, while Madole posted two doubles and a home run. Carmine Pagano connected with five hits to go along with a double and three runs scored. Despite tallying one hit, Kole Harris had a team-leading six RBIs and also touched home four times in four starts.

On the mound, Jordan Fulbright and Eric Whitecavage paced the Bulldogs. Fulbright made two ap­pearances, where he tossed six innings and allowed just two hits. He didn't allow an earned run and struck out a pair. Whitecavage appeared in three games and worked four innings and allowed one run. In the second game of the series versus Campbell, Whitecavage earned his second win on the season, and Fulbright earned his first save of his career. Jesse Juday also made three appearances, where he totaled 1.2 innings without allowing a run. ­­­

Scouting USC Upstate

USC Upstate enters the mid-week game with a 14-14-1 overall mark and a 1-2 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference. In its conference-opening series, the Spartans won game one of the three-game set versus Kennesaw State. The Owls won the series opener and claimed the rubber match this past weekend.

The Spartans have two big threats offensively in Charlie Carpenter and Kyle Gensler. Carpenter, who has started in all 29 games, has a .387 batting average and 41 hits. He also has seven doubles, three triples and a pair of home runs. Gensler has 35 hits, four doubles, 17 runs and 17 RBIs on the year.

On the mound, the Bulldogs will see several key relievers on Tuesday in Grant Hoppock, Trey Van Der Weid and Will Wheeler. The trio all have a 4.05 ERA or lower this year and have appeared in at least 12 contests this season. Hoppock has appeared in 16 contests and totes a 3-1 record. He has a stellar 2.14 ERA and has limited batters to a .227 batting average. Van Der Weid has a 2-3 mark and a 3.49 ERA, while Wheeler has a 1-1 overall record with a 4.05 ERA.

About the Catamounts

Western Carolina enters the Vs. Cancer game at McCormick Field with a 3-23 overall mark and a 1-5 record in Southern Conference play. In road games, WCU is 1-12 with its only win being an 8-5 victory over The Citadel.

The Catamounts have three players - Justice Bigbie, Luke Robinson and Spencer Holcomb - hitting over .300 this season. Bigbie paces the squad with a .375 clip in 26 games. He has 36 hits and seven doubles to go along with 25 RBIs. Robinson has a .304 batting average with 28 total hits, and Holcomb has a .301 mark with 25 hits and seven total doubles.

The Bulldogs will face Corey Sikes on Wednesday. It will be his first start of the season, but he has appeared in 10 games this year. He has twirled 12.1 innings and has allowed 16 hits and 13 runs. Out of the bullpen, Asheville will see Zach Franklin, who has appeared in nine games. Franklin has tossed 22.1 innings and has allowed seven earned runs and owns a 0-3 record.
