Bulldogs Suffer 1-0 Setback While Playing Shorthanded

10.17.2018 | Women's Soccer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Playing with only 10 players, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback at USC Upstate on Wednesday night at the County University Soccer Stadium.

BULLDOG BITES

How It Happened

USC Upstate started to attack the Bulldog net early in the first half, as the Spartans took seven shots in the first 20 minutes of play. Of those shots, three were on frame, and freshman goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley saved all of the attempts.

At the half, Upstate was out-shooting the Bulldogs, 12-0, but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes.

Seven minutes into the second half, USC Upstate had a prime chance to take the lead, as Asheville was called for a handball inside of the penalty area. Abbie Ellis, who was tied for sixth in the country in goals scored prior to tonight's game, took the penalty kick and knocked it past a diving O'Malley. The goal was Ellis' 14th of the season and put her team up by a goal.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, senior Ellie Stone was ejected due to a red card in the 58th minute.

Playing with only 10 players, Asheville continued to defend its net for the next 16 minutes.

The Bulldogs' first scoring chance arose in the 74th minute when Maura Coolbaugh ripped a shot from distance after a Spartan clearance. The shot attempt started to drop inside in the 18-yard box, but the ball grazed the crossbar and sailed over the end line for a goal kick.

USC Upstate continued to hold most of the possession for the rest of the match, as the Spartans sealed the one-goal victory at home over the Bulldogs.

O'Malley finished the match with 10 saves, which marks the fourth time this season with double-digit saves.

UNC Asheville will return to the friendly confines of Greenwood Field on Saturday, Oct. 20, as it plays host to Radford. The Big South contest will serve as Senior Day for seven Bulldogs, and kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
