Women's Soccer Suffers 2-0 Setback to ETSU on Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer suffered a 2-0 setback to visiting East Tennessee State at Greenwood Field on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 23).

The teams played a tightly contested first half, with Asheville holding a 7-6 edge in shots in the period and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. The teams would trade possessions and runs throughout the early part of the second half, before ETSU would strike for their first goal in the 69th minute. Kassie Estep controlled the ball on the far wing, before playing a beautiful cross to the far post to find the head of Abbey Hayberg who headed the ball to the top right corner for a 1-0 ETSU lead. ETSU would apply defensive pressure after the goal, ultimately leading to their second goal in the 84th minute that brought the contest to its final score. Sadie Commerford fed the ball from the far wing into the box where it was stashed home by Reagan Fitzgerald to seal the victory for the Buccaneers.

Each team registered 12 shots in the match, with ETSU holding a 6-2 edge in shots on frame in the contest. Asheville was able to edge ETSU 5-3 in corner kicks in the contest. Lili Adams paced the offense matching her career-high with five shots, while Arna Hogarth-Scott also had two shots in the match. Kathleen Doane, Kandis Calvin, Landyn Wessels, Haydan Erck and Karlee Benz each registered one shot in the contest, with Doane matching her career-high. London Phoenix (1-1-1) made a career-high four saves between the pipes for the Bulldogs in the match.Â
