Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw with The Citadel Thursday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with The Citadel Thursday night (Sept. 3) at Greenwood Field.
The teams spent the first 20 minutes trading possessions and feeling each other out, before The Citadel struck first in the 21st minute. Gabrielle Macer fed a ball in tight to Samantha Grantham, who turned and bent a ball to the far left corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for The Citadel. Asheville was able to mount a quick counter, with the equalizer in the 25th minute. Landyn Wessels crossed a ball into the middle that Lilly Graumann was able to feed forward to Kandis Calvin. Calvin took a touch and stashed home her first goal as a Bulldog and first of her college career.
The teams continued to trade runs and chances throughout the second half, with Asheville just missing a few good scoring chances and The Citadel making a late push. The Citadel made a late run in the last five minutes, that began with another look from Grantham in the 86th minute. Grantham sent a ball on frame destined for the top left corner that freshman London Phoenix was able to keep the ball out with some help from the crossbar. After The Citadel rang a shot off the right post, Phoenix made another clutch save in the 87th minute where a ball came in above her and she extended with one hand to knock the ball down and preserve the draw.
Asheville outshot The Citadel 11-10 in the match, while The Citadel edged Asheville 6-3 in shots on frame in the contest. Asheville was also able to edge The Citadel in corner kicks in the match 3-1. Lili Adams paced the offense with four shots, while Arna Hogarth-Scott and Graumann each registered two shots in the match and Alex Gib, Calvin and Manuela Schreier each posted one shot in the match. Phoenix matched her career high with five saves in the contest.
The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (Sept. 6) traveling to Clemson for a non-conference tilt. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Clemson, S.C. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
