10.13.2018 | Women's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Senior defender Kyra Kandel netted the game-winning goal for UNC Asheville women's soccer, as the golden goal in overtime lifted the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over Hampton on Saturday at Greenwood Field.
The goal in the 107th minute was Kandel's first career game-winning goal. The goal marked her second goal this season, which is a new single-season high.
The golden-goal victory also marked the first time this year that Asheville has defeated a team after 90 minutes of regulation. Previously the Bulldogs played in four overtime games and all ended in ties.
BULLDOG BITES
How It Happened
The first 45 minutes of action was slow for both teams, as both squads were feeling each other out. The Bulldogs had a couple of chances to take the lead in the first half, including two opportunities from Kandel and Maya Gutman.
Kandel knocked a shot on goal in the 22nd minute, while Gutman struck an attempt on frame in the 33rd minute. However, both attempts were saved by the Hampton goalkeeper.
At the halftime break, UNC Asheville was out-shooting the Pirates, 7-2, and also had a 5-0 advantage on corners.
To start the second half, the Bulldogs really attacked the Hampton net, as they took five shots in the first 15 minutes of play. Three of those attempts were on goal but all were saved.
Neither team had another solid look at net for the final 30 minutes of play, which ended regulation in a 0-0 tie.
Playing in their fifth overtime game of the season, the Bulldogs almost sealed the victory in the 98th minute. Justine James took a shot, but the attempt hit the right side of the net.
The Bulldogs finally found the back of the net in the 107th minute when Kandel scored her second goal of the year. Bella Iorio gained possession off a pass and fed a cross at the top of the 18-yard box. Kandel controlled the ball and found herself one-on-one with the Hampton goalkeeper. The senior buried the shot past the Pirate goalkeeper to win the contest for the Bulldogs, 1-0.
Overall Asheville out-shot Hampton, 18-5, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Asheville also took a season-high 10 corner kicks to Hampton's three.
Gutman and Kandel combined for nine of the team's 18 shots, and the duo also combined for five of the team's seven shots on goal.

UNC Asheville plays host to Winthrop on Monday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. The contest is a makeup of last week's rainout. The match will also be free to everyone.
