How It Happened
The match started slow for both teams, but the game was blown open when Chillson ripped UNC Asheville's first shot of the match in the 16th minute.
Following a throw-in, James worked through two Winthrop players and slid the ball to Chillson on the right side of the field. After a couple of touches, Chillson connected with a shot from outside of the 18-yard box, and the Winthrop goalkeeper watched the ball slide into the left side of the net. The goal was the sophomore's second of the season and the fifth of her career.
Nineteen minutes later, the Bulldogs doubled their lead, as James netted the second goal of the contest. Winthrop earned a throw-in on its attacking half, but Taylor Barber intercepted the ball and connected a pass to a teammate to start a counterattack. Chillson worked up the right side of the field, and she fed a pass to Gillian Oyos near midfield. With an Eagle defender pressing Oyos, she drilled a long through ball to a streaking James, who was able to split between two Eagle defenders. The Winthrop goalkeeper started to press the senior, but James dribbled around the Eagle and tapped the ball into the empty net.
In the final 10 minutes of the first half, neither team had a solid chance at goal, which made the score 2-0 in favor of the Bulldogs at halftime.
At the 15-minute intermission, Winthrop held a narrow advantage in total shots (6-4) and shots on goal (4-2).
UNC Asheville had another chance to score in the 53rd minute when Bella Iorio took a shot from 18 yards out. She corralled a failed Winthrop clearance, and the junior ripped a shot that found the crossbar but flew out of harm's way.
In the 73rd minute, the Eagles scored their first goal of the game off a set piece. Keeley Leising took a shot from 22 yards out, which forced Courtney O'Malley to save the ball. However Winthrop's Clara Conboy jumped on the deflection and tapped it in past the Asheville goalkeeper. The goal was Conboy's first of the season.
Down 2-1, Winthrop didn't start to attack until just over a minute left in the contest. In the final seconds of the match, they took three shots with two being on goal, but O'Malley and the Bulldog defense stayed strong and fended off the Eagle attack.
With the 2-1 victory, UNC Asheville extended its winning streak to two straight and now has eight points in Big South play.
With her three points on Monday, it marks the second time James has tallied three or more points in a single contest in her career. She scored two goals versus The Citadel in 2015, which is still her career high (four points). James' three points marked the third time a UNC Asheville player has tallied three or more points in a single game this season – Kyra Kandel at Longwood (three points) and Emily Dueñas versus The Citadel (three points).
What's Next?
UNC Asheville will play its third game in the last five days on Wednesday, Oct. 17, as the Bulldogs travel to first-year Big South member USC Upstate. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
