Women’s Soccer Looks to Extend Win Streak at USC Upstate

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sporting a two-game win streak, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team travels to first-year Big South member USC Upstate on Wednesday for a league matchup in Spartanburg, S.C.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at County University Soccer Stadium.

About UNC Asheville

UNC Asheville travels to Spartanburg with a 3-6-4 overall record and a 2-3-2 mark in Big South Conference matches. The Bulldogs sport a two-game win streak with victories over Hampton and Winthrop.

In the two-game win streak, Kyra Kandel, Skyler Chillson and Justine James all netted goals for the Bulldogs. Kandel tallied the lone goal versus the Pirates, while Chillson and James scored goals versus Winthrop on Monday.

Bella Iorio, Gillian Oyos and James each earned an assist in the last two games.

For her game-winning goal in the 107th minute versus Hampton, Kandel was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week. She assisted in pitching a shutout over the Pirates and held the Hampton offense to only five shots with only one on goal.

Courtney O'Malley started in goal the last two games and played 197 minutes. In that stretch, she made nine saves and only allowed one goal. On the year, the freshman goalkeeper has an impressive 0.88 goals against average and a 0.892 save percentage.

Scouting USC Upstate

USC Upstate hosts the Bulldogs on Wednesday with an 8-7 overall record and a 3-4 mark in league play. At County University Soccer Stadium the Spartans are 6-2.

The Spartans are currently on a two-game Big South losing streak with losses to Longwood (3-0) and Radford (4-1). Their last league win was a 4-2 victory over Winthrop earlier in October.

USC Upstate is out-scoring its opposition, 33-24, and out-shooting opponents, 248-179.

Leading the offense is Abbie Ellis, who has 13 goals this season. The junior midfielder leads the Big South in goals scored and is tied for sixth in Division I. Ellis has scored in nine of the 15 games this year, including tallying multiple goals in four games. In her last five contests, she has scored seven goals.

Jada Kinlaw and Isabella Burns are also offensive threats, as they each have at least five goals scored. Kinlaw has six goals and an assist, while Burns has five goals and three assists.

Montanna Hill leads USC Upstate with four assists. Ellis and Burns are second on the squad with three assists.

The Spartans have used three goalkeepers this year. Samantha Munyon has appeared in the most games with eight, and she sports the lowest goals against average (1.24). Madison McNally has started five games, and Logan Pace has appeared in four contests with two starts. Overall the trio has a 1.58 goals against average and has combined for five shutouts.

Last Time Out Versus USC Upstate

The Bulldogs and Spartans faced off last year in Asheville, and USC Upstate edged UNC Asheville, 1-0. Ellis scored the deciding goal in the 48th minute for USC Upstate. The Bulldogs out-shot the Spartans last year, 16-9, and had the advantage in shots on goal (6-4).

The last time the two squads faced off in Spartanburg was in 2016, and UNC Asheville downed USC Upstate, 2-0. Caroline Houser scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, and Paige Trent scored eight minutes later to seal the two-goal win.

What's Next?

To conclude the regular season home schedule, the Bulldogs welcome Radford to Greenwood Field on Saturday, Oct. 20. The weekend match will serve as senior day, as UNC Asheville will recognize seven seniors. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
