How It Happened
Similar to the beginning of the Elon match, UNC Asheville and USC Upstate went back-and-forth for nearly half of the first 45 minutes. The best chance for either team came after the 28th minute when Asheville struck four shots in a span of three minutes including putting one attempt on frame and two being blocked.
One of the best chances for the Bulldogs came in the 35th minute off a corner when Courtney Naber knocked a ball to the back post to Maura Coolbaugh. With no one on her, the Fuquay-Varina, N.C. native struck a shot that went towards the bottom right of the goal, but the Spartan goalkeeper made a diving save to keep the game level.
Heading into the halftime, Asheville dominated USC Upstate 10-3 on shots with 4-1 on goal.
The deadlock was broken early in the second half as USC Upstate was awarded a penalty kick after a Bulldog defender and a Spartan forward got their feet tangled inside the 18-yard box. Abbie Ellis took the penalty kick and found the left side of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs didn't get another solid look at goal until the 71st minute when Naber faked a defender to her right and took a left-footed shot from just outside the penalty box. However, the Spartan goalkeeper made another save as she finished the night with six saves.
Late in the game, UNC Asheville pulled a defender to give the Bulldogs more threats in the attacking half. They held most of the possession late, but USC Upstate fended off the heavy attack and held on for the 1-0 victory at Greenwood Field.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 3-4-1 overall, and the Spartans move to 4-4 on the year.
What's Next
UNC Asheville concludes its non-conference schedule on Sept. 20 as the Bulldogs travel to South Carolina State for a 5 p.m. kickoff in Orangeburg, S.C.
