Fitzgerald Joins 500-Rebound Club as Bulldogs Down Mountaineers 69-60 in Overtime

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In its first overtime game of the season, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team downed Appalachian State 69-60 on Thursday inside Kimmel Arena as the Bulldogs posted a 12-3 advantage in the five-minute overtime period.

With her eight rebounds versus the Mountaineers, Bronaza Fitzgerald joined the exclusive 500-rebound club. She is the 18th member of UNC Asheville to join the club and the 112th student-athlete to eclipse the mark in the Big South Conference.

With only needing two rebounds to join the 500-rebound club, Fitzgerald made quick work of the milestone as the senior center grabbed two rebounds within the first two minutes of the opening tip. She is the first player this season to join the club in the Big South as well.

After Fitzgerald reached her milestone, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-3 advantage behind Armani Hampton's four points in the first three minutes of the opening quarter. The Bulldogs started to find the bottom of the net though as they posted a 13-0 run to jump out to a 16-6 lead. Six Bulldogs recorded at least two points in the first ten minutes of play as junior Jessica Wall knocked down two three pointers in the opening quarter.

With a 17-11 advantage, the Bulldogs continued to hold their ground as they went into halftime with a 27-23 lead. Despite App State outscoring the Bulldogs 12-10 in the second quarter, junior guard Zip Scott paced the squad with three points and four rebounds.

Out of halftime, the Bulldogs were shooting lights out as they went 8-for-12 (.667 percent) from the field. Fitzgerald netted four of the team's baskets as she recorded eight points and a steal in the third stanza. Wall notched six points behind a two three pointer quarter, and Khaila Webb posted an unblemished field goal percentage as she totaled four points to go along with three assists and a steal.

Despite being down 11 points, Appalachian State came roaring back by scoring 20 points in the final 10 minutes of regulation to force an overtime period with the game tied at 57-57. The Mountaineers had three small runs that resulted in a 19-6 run that spanned over eight minutes in the fourth quarter. Eighteen of its 20 total points in the fourth quarter were scored in the paint for Appalachian State as it shot an impressive .600 percent (9-for-15) in the stanza. Leading the comeback was LaPresha Stanley as she went 4-for-5 from the field (10 points) to go along with a pair of rebounds and an assist.

Even though the Mountaineers muscled their way back into the contest, the Bulldogs showed no mercy in overtime as they downed Appalachian State 12-3 in the first overtime contest of the season for UNC Asheville. App State scored the first basket of the overtime period, but Asheville went on a 10-0 run to secure its second home victory of the season, 69-60.

Four Bulldogs posted double-figures in points as Wall paved the way with 18 points. The Chapel Hill, N.C. native nearly matched the program record again in made three pointers, which she tied in the previous game versus USC Upstate, but she fell one made three pointer shy as she tallied six in Thursday's contest.

Fitzgerald shot .500 percent from the field (6-for-12) as the center tallied 13 points to go along with eight rebounds (five offensive and three defensive). Webb finished her night with 13 points as well as five assists and four steals. Scott was the final Bulldog to score in double-digits as the junior went 5-for-13 from the field. She also grabbed seven rebounds, which matched a single game record for the Anderson, S.C. native.

Juliet Esadah snatched eight total rebounds to match Fitzgerald for the team lead as the Bulldogs recorded 41 total rebounds including 17 offensive boards.

As a team, the Bulldogs went 7-for-16 behind the three-point arc (.438). The Mountaineers committed 20 turnovers as Asheville forced nine steals in the non-conference bout.

UNC Asheville advances to 3-7 on the year as it has won three contest in its last four games. Appalachian State drops to 2-9 after defeating Marshall this past weekend.
