Second-Half Surge Not Enough as Bulldogs Fall 71-63 to Furman

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To conclude non-conference play, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team fell 71-63 to Furman on Thursday night inside Kimmel Arena. The Bulldogs recorded 40 points in the second half, including a 24-point third quarter, as they out-scored the Paladins in the final 20 minutes of action.

Game Highlights
Furman started the game quickly as it forced a pair of UNC Asheville turnovers in the first minute. The Paladins capitalized as they jumped out to a 5-0 advantage, but the Bulldogs posted a 9-0 run to earn their first lead of the contest. The Bulldogs and Paladins went back-and-forth to conclude the quarter as Asheville held a 16-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Paladins couldn't miss in the second quarter as they went on an 18-1 run to start the stanza. They extended their lead as high as 18 points in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 15 points at the half – 38-23.
UNC Asheville posted a strong third quarter as the Bulldogs netted 24 points, which closed the Furman lead to six – 53-47. The Bulldogs went 8-for-15 from the field including an unblemished 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. The Paladins committed seven fouls and seven turnovers, which allowed the Bulldogs to score 10 points off turnovers in the third stanza. Khaila Webb paced the Bulldogs as she totaled eight points while going 4-for-5 from the field.
The fourth quarter went back-and-forth as Furman fended off the second-half Bulldog surge. Of the 18 total points for Furman, the Paladins made 10 of their points from the charity stripe as they only made three baskets in the final ten minutes of play.
Three Bulldogs posted double-figures as Bronaza Fitzgerald totaled 16 points and eight rebounds, which led the squad in both categories. Of her eight rebounds, six came on the offensive glass as she led the Bulldogs to a 15-9 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Webb netted 12 points as she went 6-for-10 from the field, and Jessica Wall scored 10 points. In her second game of the season, Tiffany Wilson tallied seven points as she corralled five rebounds and a block. Juliet Esadah grabbed five boards as she led the Bulldogs with four defensive rebounds.
The Bulldogs dominated the paint as they out-scored the Paladins 36-28. They also held a 14-point advantage in bench points as Nadiria Evans, Amaryah Corpening, Ali Trani and Wilson combined for the twenty Asheville bench points.
UNC Asheville falls to 3-8 to conclude its non-conference schedule, and Furman advances the 9-4 on the year.
