ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team tried to end Longwood's five-game undefeated streak, but the Lancers extended their stretch as they upended the Bulldogs 3-1 at Greenwood Field on Saturday afternoon.
BULLDOG BITES
How It Happened
Despite Asheville having a potent offense, it was ironically the Lancers' offense who struck first. Twenty-seven seconds into the match, Emilie Kupsov, Longwood's leading goal scorer, opened the game as she found the net early in the match.
Even down by a goal, the Bulldog offense started to take form as it dominated possession for the rest of the half.
Asheville put a pair of shots of frame as Skyler Chillson and Emma Houser each struck a shot on goal in the first 11 minutes of the match. The Bulldog offense continued attacking the frame as it took four more shots before halftime.
At the half, UNC Asheville was dominating possession and total shots (8-5). The Bulldogs even put two more shots on goal than the opposition.
The second half was a back-and-forth match as neither team was able to put its foot on the ball. Longwood ultimately scored the first goal of the second half as Madison Lockamy gave the Lancers the 2-0 advantage.
After the second goal, Asheville decided to play with three defenders, and the game plan worked in the 86th minute when Caroline Houser scored her fourth goal of the year. Katie Tuorto took the free kick, and after the ball bounced in the box, Caroline Houser put a foot on the bouncing ball and flicked it over the Longwood goalkeeper. The late goal cut the deficit in half with only a few minutes remaining.
The Bulldogs kept pounding the Longwood goal as Courtney Naber and Chillson combined for four shots in a span of a minute and a half. However, the Lancers scored the dagger with under 30 seconds remaining as Kupsov scored her second goal of the match on a breakaway.
With the 3-1 defeat, Asheville drops to 6-8-1 overall and 2-4 in the Big South. Longwood moves to 10-4-2 and 5-1-1 in the league as it extends its undefeated streak to six straight.
What's Next
The Bulldogs have three matches remaining in the regular season as Asheville's next match is on the road at Radford on Oct. 18. Kickoff set for 7 p.m. in Radford, Va.
