CHARLESTON, S.C.?Justin Schumer, Reed Kreiser, and Danny Baatz all homered as UNC Asheville matched its season-high in runs with a 12-6 victory over Charleston Southern.
Schumer and Kreiser got the Bulldogs (3-8, 1-1 Big South) on the board in the top of the first inning. After Catlin Carter singled to open the game, Schumer hit his second home run of the season and of the series. Kreiser followed with his fourth home run of the year giving the Bulldogs back-to-back home runs for the first time since Kevin Weidenbacher and Kevin Mattison went back-to-back against Marist on March 16, of last season.
Charleston Southern (5-6, 1-1 Big South) tied the game in the bottom of the first. After back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases, a RBI ground out by Kory Morian got the first run across. Nick Chinners followed with a two RBI double to tie the score.
The Bucs took the lead in the second. Tom Burkett delivered a one out triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brantley Meier to give CSU a 4-3 lead.
Austin Graham led off the Bulldog fourth with a single and then scored on a home run by Baatz, his first of the year that put Asheville on top of good. The Bulldogs would add four more runs in the fourth, three were unearned. A failed pick-off play with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score and a sacrifice fly scored the third run.
Charleston Southern scored single runs in the fourth and the sixth. Blake Hunt homered in the fourth and a lead-off walk came around to score on a Meier RBI single in the sixth to make the score 9-6.
Asheville put the game away with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Mike Vaughn walked to lead off the seventh and moved to second on a wild pitch. Cody Buch doubled to plate Vaughn for the 10th Asheville run.
In the eighth, Kreiser reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. Beau Zinman doubled home Kreiser and then scored on a base hit by Buch.
Buch and Carter each went 3-for-5 in the game for the Bulldogs. Schumer and Baatz each had two hits as Asheville had 14 hits in the game.
