ASHEVILLE, N.C.? Kevin Weidenbacher moved his hit streak to 30-straight games but Wofford used a five-run second inning to hand UNC Asheville its third straight defeat 7-3 at McCormick Field on Wednesday night.
Asheville (13-22) scored all three of its runs in the first inning off Wofford (19-13) starter Jordan Mickelberry (1-1). Kevin Mattison walked to lead off the inning and stole second base. Weidenbacher wasted no time extending his streak as he doubled off the scoreboard in right center to plate Mattison. Elliott Arrington singled to put runners at the corners. Reed Kreiser followed with a base hit to score Weidenbacher and Danny Baatz's sacrifice fly scored Arrington to give the Dogs a 3-0 lead.
Wofford answered in the next inning. Neil Robinette singled to lead off the inning in front of a RBI double by Mo Seay. A walk and a bunt single loaded the bases with one out. Sterling Dye walked to force in the second run of the inning. Kyle Behrendt, who went 3-for-4, singled to tie the game. Back-to-back sacrifice flies gave the Terriers a 5-3 lead they not relinquish.
Ben Buchanan (0-6) settled down after the second inning and retired 11 of the next 13 batters he faced without allowing a hit in his final four innings of work.
Asheville threatened in the fourth, sixth, and ninth innings but could not plate any runs on four Wofford relivers.
Wofford scored the final two runs of the game in the seventh inning. Shane Kirkley had an RBI double that scored Behrendt. Jake Williams had the Terriers third sacrifice fly of the night to plate Michael Gilmartin with the game's final run.
Terrier hitters only hit into three ground ball outs in the game, flying out 17 times and striking out seven times. Wofford pitchers combined for nine strike-outs. Both teams had only three hits each after the second inning.
Asheville opens up a Big South series on Friday night at McCormick Field when it welcomes VMI to town. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. and can be seen on www.bigsouthsports.com.
