04.01.2008 | Baseball
BOONE, N.C.? Elliott Arrington went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI but UNC Asheville pitchers could stop a powerful Appalachian State offense that score 23 runs on 24 hits in a 23-8 victory over Asheville on Tuesday night.
The 23 runs were a season high for an Appalachian State (15-13) team that has scored 15 or more runs six times this season. Andrew Franco led the way for the Mountaineers going 5-for-6 with two home runs and seven RBI. Wes Hobson went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI and the left field combo of David Rubinstein (3-for-3) and Jason Wallace (1-for-2) combined to go 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBI.
Asheville (12-18) starter Graham Baughn (1-1) took the loss as he walked three batters and hit two more allowing five runs on just one hit in a third of an inning. The Bulldogs used six pitchers on the night who combined to allow eight walks.
Zach Quate (2-0) picked up the win going six innings allowing seven runs on eight hits. The ASU bullpen allowed just one run on four hits. Mountaineer pitchers walked just one batter and struck out eight Bulldogs.
Arrington hit his second home run of the season in the top of the first inning to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived as ASU scored nine times in the opening inning highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Franco.
The Bulldogs scored six runs in the top of the third inning to make the score 12-7. Catlin Carter and Kevin Weidenbacher each singled to lead off the inning and Danny Baatz reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Arrington followed with a two-RBI double. Justin Schumer doubled home Baatz and Reed Kreiser singled home Arrington. Carter's second hit of the inning drove in two more runs but that was all the scoring for Asheville until the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Johnny Martinez walked in front of a single by Beau Zinman. Martinez would score on a RBI single by Mike Vaughn.
Weidenbacher went 2-for-5 to extend his hit streak to 25-straight games. Carter went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI as the Bulldogs had 12 hits on the day. Asheville pitching has allowed double figure runs in 11 of their 18 losses this season.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Western Carolina for a 7 p.m. game.
