03.09.2008 | Baseball

CHARLESTON, S.C.? The Citadel hit four home runs and scored six unearned runs a 13-7 victory over UNC Asheville in the final game of the Citadel Shootout at Riley Park on Sunday

The Citadel (9-3) scored four runs on a pair of home runs in the bottom of the first inning. Chris Swauger hit a one out solo shot and Bryan Altman hit a three-run blast to highlight the inning. The home standing Bulldogs added a run in the third on a solo homer by Chris McGuiness to build a 4-0 lead.

Asheville (5-8) clawed back into the game with a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to make the score 5-4. Kevin Mattison, who went 3-for-3 on the day, led off the fourth inning with a base hit and went to second base on a wild pitch. He would move to third on an infield hit by Danny Baatz and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Robinson.

In the fifth, Chris Freeman reached on an error to lead off the inning. Catlin Carter reached on a single and both players moved up a base on a wild pitch. Kevin Wiedenbacher had an infield single to load the bases. Mattison then singled home Freeman and Carter. A sacrifice fly by Reed Kreiser scored Wiedenbacher.

The Citadel broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. A costly throwing error made six of the runs in the inning unearned. Richard Jones hit a three run home run to highlight the frame for the Citadel.

Asheville scored three times in the top of the eighth. Beau Zinman, who went 3-for-4, singled in front of an Elliott Arrington double to put runners at second and third with no body out. Back to back fielding errors plated both runners. A RBI double by Mattison brought the third run across.

Raymond Copenhauer (1-0) picked up the win for the Citadel in relief. Grier Harrington (0-2) took the loss for Asheville throwing four innings giving up seven runs (six earned) on five hits, three of them home runs. He walked five and struck out two batters. Both teams left nine runners on base.

Asheville will stay on the road for its next two games. The Bulldogs travel to North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, March 11, for a 3 p.m. game.
