Weidenbacher Breaks Record; Dogs Fall 3-2 at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C.? Kevin Weidenbacher went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to a school record 22 games surpassing the former record of 21 straight games set last season by Rob Vernon but High Point scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth innings for a 3-2 victory over UNC Asheville on Friday night.
Asheville (12-15, 0-1 Big South) starter Alan DeRatt had a one hit shutout through seven innings and looked to be in line for his sixth straight victory when he ran into trouble in the eighth. After an error allowed the lead off batter Max Fulginiti to reach, Robby Kuzdale doubled to right center scoring Fulginiti. Kuzdale was thrown out at third trying to stretch the into a triple of the first out of the inning. Alfie Wheeler then hit a soft double down the right field line to put the tying run on base.
Ben Buchanan (0-5) came on in relief of DeRatt who went 7.1 innings allowing an two runs (one earned) on three hits. Jeff Cowen singled off Buchanan to score Wheeler and tie the game. Pablo Rosario lifted a fly ball to right field that was misplayed into a double placing runners at second and third. Billy Alvino's sacrifice fly proved to be the game winner for High Point (6-18, 1-3 Big South).
The Bulldogs scored both of their runs in the fourth inning after two were out. Reed Kreiser walked in front of a RBI double by Justin Schumer who went 3-for-4 in the game. Danny Baatz who went 2-for-4 singled a batter later to score Schumer and give Asheville a 2-0 lead.
Asheville threatened to blow the game open in the seventh inning loading the bases with just one out. Jeremy Berg (1-1) came on to get the final two outs of the inning without allowing a run throwing 1.2 innings allowing just one hit for his first win over the season.
Bubba O'Donnell pitched the ninth of his second save of the season. Asheville out hit High Point 11 to 5 in the game but left 11 men on base.
