USC Upstate Slips Past UNC Asheville, 4-3

Akron Evens Series with 11-6 Win over UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C.? Akron scored eight runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take an 11-6 victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday and even the weekend series at one game apiece.

Catlin Carter and Brett Robinson each had two hits for the Bulldogs (3-4) who had eight hits on the afternoon.

Kurt Davidson led a 14-hit Akron (3-3) attack going 3-for-4 with four RBI. Kyle Hallett, John Turk, and Drew Turocy each had two hits for the Zips.

Akron scored first, manufacturing a run in the top of the first inning. Brett Savage had a lead off single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Haas/. Davidson followed with an RBI double to left, scoring Savage.

The Bulldogs took advantage of an Akron error to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Reed Kreiser reached on an error and took second on the play. Elliott Arrington made the Zips pay for the miscue with an RBI single.

The Zips regained the advantage in the fourth, starting the frame with consecutive singles by Jake Plata, Hallett and Turk. Turocy drove in Plata and Hallett with a double to right field, making the score 3-1 in UA's favor.

Asheville answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Justin Schumer had a lead off single and scored two batters later on a Robinson single. With two outs, Carter hit the first pitch he saw to deep center for an RBI triple and scored the go-ahead run on Wiedenbacher's single.

Akron used a two-out rally in the fifth to get the lead back. Plata drew a two-out walk and Turk cleared the bases with a home run to center field to put the Zips up 5-4. The blast was the first by UA this season and Turk's second career round-tripper.

In the sixth, Akron padded its advantage with two runs to lead 7-4. Ryan Frazee had a leadoff double to chase Asheville starter Ben Buchanan (0-2). With one out, Haas drew a walk from relief pitcher Dylan Waters and Davidson followed with an RBI single and Haas advanced to third due to an error on the play. Doug McNulty plated Haas with a single to center.

The Zips kept peddle down in the seventh, scoring four runs to go up 11-4. Turocy had a one-out single and Frazee walked. With two outs, Haas drove in the two with a double to left-center. Davidson followed with a two-run home run to left. Davidson, who became Akron's all-time leader in home runs last season, now has 30 for his career.

Asheville made a run at the Zips in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs. An error on the Zips allowed on run to score. With the bases still loaded, the Bulldogs provided the final score of 11-6, scoring on a UA double play. The game ended one batter later with a ground out to third.

Yike pitched five complete, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and a walk with a strikeout. Danziger went the final four, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with two strikeouts.

Akron and UNCA will play the rubber match of the series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 pm. Michael Bogaert is schedule to pitch for Asheville against Turocy for Akron. The game can be heard on the internet at uncabulldogs.com.
