03.02.2008 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Michael Bogaert went eight innings allowing just four hits and one run and Kevin Mattison hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lead UNC Asheville to a 4-1 victory over Akron in the rubber game of their series Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Bogaert (2-0) retired 19 straight batters after a one out singe in the first inning until he walked the lead-off batter in the eighth inning. Kevin Haas singled in the first and was caught stealing allowing Bogaert to face the minimum 21 batter through the first seven innings.

After five scoreless innings in which both teams had managed just one hit, Asheville (3-4) broke through in the sixth inning. Chris Freeman beat out an infield single with one out. Kevin Wiedenbacher followed with his second hit of the game in front of Mattison's second home run of the season to right field to give the Dogs a 3-0 lead.

Asheville added to the lead with a run in the eighth inning. Mattison was hit by a pitch to lead off, stole second, and went to third on a bunt single by Reed Kriser. Elliott Arrington hit into a double play scoring Mattison and make it 4-0.

Bogaert came out for the ninth but allowed a lead off double to Drew Tuorcy and a single to Ryan Frazee to plate Akron's (3-3) only run. Chris Brookey came on to induce a fielder's choice and Justin Schumer got Haas to hit into a game ending double play to record his second save of the season.

Tuorcy went six innings for Akron allowing three runs on six hits to see his record drop to 1-1 on the season.

Mattison had just two hits in the three-game series both were home runs. He had a two run shot on Friday and then his three run blast on Sunday. Wiedenbacher went 6-for-14 in the three games. Akron's Haas was 4-for-10 on the weekend.

Asheville will travel to Tallahasse, Fla., to face Florida State in a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both games are at 6 p.m.
