TALLAHASSEE, Fla.?Kevin Weidenbacher went 3-for-4 and Justin Schumer hit a solo home run but No. 9 ranked Flordia State defeated UNC Asheville 11-4 in the first game of a two game series at Dick Howser Stadium on Tuesday night.
Florida State (8-0) scored three runs in the first inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. Schumer hit his second home run of the season off FSU starter Bo O'Dell in the top of the second inning.
Asheville (4-5) pulled to within 3-2 in the fourth inning. Reed Kriser led off with a double and then scored two batters later on a RBI single by Johnny Martinex.
FSU answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth to build an 8-2 lead.
Back-to-back walks to Danny Baatz and Chris Freeman to open the top of the seventh began a promising inning for Asheville. Another walk to Catlin Carter loaded the bases. Weidenbacher hit into a double play that scored Baatz. Kevin Mattison then came through with a RBI single to score Freeman and make the score 8-4.
FSU added insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth to prove the final score.
The two teams will battle on Wednesday night in a 6 p.m. game.
