Bulldogs Use Furious Seventh Inning Rally to Take Series Finale over Gardner-Webb
04.04.2026 | Baseball
Â
The first inning featured plenty of scoring, with Gardner-Webb putting up five runs in the top of the frame before Asheville responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jake Pereira began the inning with a walk, before Blaize Johnson got the Bulldogs on the board with a two-run shot to right for his ninth home run of the season and 15th of his career. Patrick Gillen would join the hit parade with a single up the middle before later stealing second, before Tyler Parks brought him home on a single to center to cap off the inning. After holding Gardner-Webb off the board in the second for what would be the first of four consecutive scoreless frames, Asheville added one run in the bottom of the second when Johnson reached on an infield single to second base, as Pereira rounded second on the play. Gardner-Webb's first baseman threw the ball away attempting to gun down Pereira, allowing him to score. The pitching would settle things down for both teams from that point, as the teams would trade scoreless frames until Gardner-Webb added a run in the sixth. With one out in the seventh and two men on, the game went into a 51-minute lightning delay just as Matthew Hall entered the game to pitch for Asheville. Hall was able to limit the damage out of the delay, as Gardner-Webb led 8-4 heading to the stretch.

Eric Krumpe would start the home half of the seventh reaching on a fielding error by the Gardner-Webb shortstop, before Coleman McGinnis would draw a walk to push him to second. Zeb Swangim would single through the left side to load the bases for Pereira at the top of the lineup, before Pereira would reach on a fielding error by the Gardner-Webb shortstop that would score Krumpe and McGinnis while Swangim moved to third and Pereira took second on the play. Johnson would rip a single to center to score Swangim and push Pereira to third, before Gillen would reach on a fielder's choice that would allow Pereira to score. After Owen Michelson continued the inning with a single through the left side, Gardner-Webb would go to the bullpen. During the next at-bat, Gillen drew a throw to second from the Gardner-Webb catcher that sailed into center allowing him to advance and try to score. Michelson would move up to second, before the throw from center field trying to nab Gillen at the plate sailed to the backstop allowing Michelson to take third on the play. Ben Green would continue the inning earning first base being hit by a pitch, before eventually stealing second. Parks would put a ball in play to shortstop, and the Gardner-Webb infield would come home with it but Michelson was able to beat the throw and score on the play. Krumpe would come back around to single to right and load the bases yet again, before Swangim would later step to the plate with two outs in the inning. The freshman Asheville product would deliver another big blow in the inning, ripping a double to right center to score both Green and Parks and score Asheville's final runs of the game. Hall would earn his fourth win of the season out of the pen, holding Gardner-Webb scoreless in the final two innings as the Bulldogs avoided the sweep in Big South Conference play.
Â
Asheville out-hit Gardner-Webb 11-10 in the game, paced by a 4-5 effort from Johnson who also drove in three runs and stretched his current on-base streak to 11 games. Swangim went 2-4 in the game driving in two, while Pereira, Gillen, Michelson, Parks and Krumpe each had one hit in the game. Pereira and Gillen each also drove in one run in the game, while Gillen and Green each stole a base in the game. Pereira scored a career-high three runs in the game, while Gillen scored twice and Johnson, Michelson, Green, Parks, Krumpe, McGinnis and Swangim each scored once. Garrett Crum got the start for the Bulldogs, getting through a rough first inning before handing the ball off to Cooper Smith who contributed 5.1 innings of relief. Smith allowed four runs, three earned on five hits to go along with two strikeouts in the game. Hall (4-0) picked up after the weather delay, firing 2.2 scoreless innings allowing two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
