Baseball Drops Wild Series Opener to High Point Thursday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball dropped a wild series opener to visiting High Point Thursday night (May 14) at Greenwood Field by a score of 11-10 in 10 innings.

Each team scored once in the first inning, with High Point taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning before Tyler Parks would single home Owen Michelson to tie the game in the home half. High Point would jump out to a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the second, before Asheville would respond with two runs in the bottom of the second to get back within 4-3. Jake Minarik was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zeb Swangim. After the second out was recorded, Minarik would move to third on a single up the middle by Logan Lowe before Blaize Johnson would deliver a big blow with a double down the right field line to score both runners while he himself advanced to third on a throw on the play. After Drew Turner hung up the first scoreless frame of the inning in the top of the third, Asheville would score three runs in the home half to take a 6-4 lead to the fourth. Ben Green led the inning off with a four-pitch walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch, before Patrick Gillen would bring him in on a one-out double down the right field line. After the second out was recorded, Swangim would lash a single up the middle to score Gillen from second before Swangim would move to second on a Jake Pereira single through the right side. After a High Point pitching change, Lowe welcomed the new High Point pitcher with an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Swangim would come home for Asheville's third run of the inning on a High Point wild pitch as Asheville led 6-4 after three innings. Each team would add one run in the fourth inning, with Asheville's run coming on a Gillen sacrifice fly to center that scored Green. With Asheville leading 7-5 in the fifth, each team would add one run in the fifth to send Asheville to the sixth with an 8-6 lead. Asheville's lone run in the fifth came on an Owen Michelson single up the middle that scored Lowe, before High Point would add one run in the top of the sixth to get within 8-7 going to the seventh. Both teams were held off the board in the seventh, before High Point scored three runs in the top of the eighth for a 10-8 lead. Asheville would stage a furious two-out rally to tie the game 10-10, starting with a Swangim walk fighting off being down to his final strike. Pereira would battle for a walk after being down to his final strike to put two runners on and turn the lineup card over, before Lowe would step to the plate with two on and two out. Lowe ripped a 1-1 pitch through the right side that scored Swangim from second and advanced Pereira to third, before an errant High Point throw sailed to the Asheville dugout that allowed Pereira to score and Lowe to advance to second. Johnson was intentionally walked to put two on for Michelson, before High Point was able to get out of the inning and take the game to the 10th. A Seojun Oh home run in the top of the 10th ultimately put the game away for High Point.

Hall fired one inning of relief allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout, before handing things off to Branden Barna. Barna (2-1) ultimately took the loss in the game for the Bulldogs allowing four runs, three earned on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.
