Bulldogs Split Saturday Twiinbill to Wrap Up Opening Series with St. Bonaventure

The teams traded scoreless frames through two innings, before St. Bonaventure struck for four runs in the top of the third. Asheville would fight back with one run in the fifth and one run in the sixth, with both runs coming on some shifty baserunning plays. In the fifth, Logan Lowe surrendered to an intentional rundown between first and second allowing Chase Klingemann to score. The same play sequence in the sixth, when Jake Minarik forced an errant thwo on a steal of second allowing Jack Torbett to score from third. St. Bonaventure responded with two runs in the seventh and fourth in the eighth, before Asheville answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth that would ultimately bring the game to its final score. Minarik began the inning with a single down the left field line, before Blaize Johnson ripped a one-out double down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Klingemann would lace a single to right center field to score both runners, before later advancing to second on a balk. Owen Michelson would rip a single through the right side that would score Klingemann for the game's final run.

Minarik, Johnson and Klingemann each had two hits in the game, while Ben Green and Michelson also had one hit each. Torbett, Minarik, Johnson, Green and Klingemann each scored one run in the game for the Bulldogs. Klingemann also drove in two runs in the game, while Green also had one RBI in the contest. Torbett, Minarik, Coleman McGinnis, Green and Michelson each stole a base in the game for Asheville. Green (0-1) took the loss in his debut on the bump, allowing four runs on five hits through 2.2 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Asheville got a solid relief outing from Garrett Crum, who fired 4.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. TJ Brooks also made his Bulldog debut out of the bullpen, allowing three runs on four hits over two innings to go along with two walks and two strikeouts.

St. Bonaventure drew first blood in the top of the first for their only run of the game. Asheville would respond with four runs in the first, two in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to pull away. Patrick Gillen began the rally in the first inning with a one-out single to left center, before Minarik ripped a double down the right field line to put two in scoring position for Johnson. Johnson put the first pitch he saw into the right field corner to score two runs, before Green drew a walk behind him. Michelson would drive a double into the right center gap to score Johnson, before Klingemann would reach on a fielder's choice and Josh Williams would draw a walk. Siezing an opportunity and catching the Bonnies defense on their heels, Michelson would steal home for the final run of the first. The scoring in the second inning would begin with a two-out rally with Minarik reaching first on a passed ball following a strikeout. Johnson would rip another double to right to push Minarik to third, before Green would single to left to score them both unearned. Michelson would start the third with a walk, before a fielder's choice and a hit batter would leave runners at first and second with one out. Torbett would single to left to load the bases, before Klingemann would come home on a Lowe sacrifice fly to right center. Gillen would follow it up with a RBI single up the middle to score Williams. Asheville's lone run in the fourth and the final run of the game would come on Johnson's second long ball of the weekend, a towering solo shot over the right field wall.

Johnson paced the offense with three hits in the game including two doubles, while Gillen and Michelson each had two hits and Minarik, Green, Williams and Torbett each had one hit in the game. Johnson also scored three times and drove in three runs, while Minarik scored twice and Gillen, Michelson, Klingemann and Williams each scored one run in the game. Green also drove in two runs in the game, while Lowe, Gillen and Michelson each drove in one run in the game. Daylinh Nguyen-Brown (1-0) earned the win on the bump for Asheville, firing 4.2 innings allowing one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Matthew Hall started his 2026 campaign with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief scattering three hits to go along with three punchouts.
