Four Bulldogs Score in Double Figures as Asheville Powers Past Simmons College of Kentucky

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Four Bulldogs scored in double figures Wednesday (Dec. 17) inside Kimmel Arena as UNC Asheville Women's Basketball powered past Simmons College of Kentucky by a score of 94-39. This marks the first time since a 98-23 win over Warren Wilson last season on Dec. 4, 2024 that the Bulldogs have held an opponent under 40 points in a game.

Asheville scored the first 10 points of the game through the first two minutes and change, before taking an 18-5 lead to the first media timeout. Asheville scored seven points to Simmons's six to take a 25-11 lead to the second quarter. Each team would score 12 points in the second quarter, as Asheville took a 37-23 lead to the half.

Asheville posted its highest-scoring quarter of the season with 36 points in the third quarter, holding Simmons to just nine to pull away in the game. Asheville would score 21 points in the fourth quarter holding Simmons to seven points in the frame to bring the game to its final score, with Asheville scoring at least 90 points for the second time this season.

Asheville shot 48.6 percent (34-70) from the field in the game, along with 42.9 percent (12-28) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (14-21) from the foul line. Asheville also outscored Simmons 22-8 off turnovers, 38-12 in the paint, 16-10 on second chances, 31-2 on fast breaks and 36-10 off the bench. Nia Green led all scorers with a career-high 22 points on a career-high nine field goals made, while Jamaria Freeman and D'yanna Maxey each scored 15 points along with Aileen Marquez adding 14 points. Jaidyn Koerdt added nine points on three three-pointers, while Journee McDaniel had six points and Deborah Orianegbena and Kristen McMillan each had five points. Sara Yarnell added two points in the game, while Kamaria Gipson also had one. Asheville out-rebounded Simmons 51-38 in the game, paced by seven boards each from Freeman, Orianegbena and Koerdt with Freeman and Koerdt each matching their career-high. Yarnell grabbed six boards in the game, while McDaniel had five and Green and McMillan had four. Marquez also had three rebounds in the game, while Maxey had two and Clementina Odom also had one. Freeman dished out a career-high seven assists in the game, while Green and McDaniel each had four assists in the game. Yarnell and Koerdt each had three assists in the game with Yarnell matching her career-high and Koerdt setting a new career-high, while Marquez and Maxey each helped on two Bulldog buckets in the game.Marquez led the Bulldogs with three steals in the game, while Freeman had two and Green, Maxey, Koerdt and McDaniel each had one swipe in the game.
