Women's Basketball Drops Conference Contest at Winthrop on Saturday

ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its Big South Conference at Winthrop on Saturday (Jan. 18) by a score of 63-43.

Asheville jumped out to a 7-2 lead through two and a half minutes, before Winthrop rallied to tie the game before the halfway point of the quarter. The Eagles would close the quarter on a 10-5 run to take their 17-12 lead to the second quarter. Winthrop would stretch its lead to double-digits outscoring Asheville 18-10 in the second quarter to take a 13-point lead to the break. Asheville got as close as within two in the quarter, but Winthrop closed the second quarter on a 13-3 run.

The teams played a close third quarter as Winthrop outscored Asheville just 16-13, before Asheville scored just eight points in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 29.8 percent (17-57) from the field, just 17.9 percent (5-28) from long range and 80 percent (4-5) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Winthrop 4-3 on second chances and 15-13 off the bench in the game, while also scoring 16 points off turnovers, 20 points in the paint and four points off fast breaks. Trinity Barnes led Asheville with a career-high eight points, while Skylar Bailey had seven and Abigail Wilson, Dakota McCaughan and Alana Swift each scored six points in the game. LaImani Simmons added five points in the game, while Taylor Wilkins had three and Jazlyn Ware also scored two. Wilson paced Asheville on the glass with six rebounds in the game, while Bailey had five rebounds to match her career-high and Ware also had four boards in the game. Barnes and Wilkins each had two rebounds in the game, while McCaughan and Swift each had two and Deborah Orianegbena and Sydney Burris also each had one rebound in the game. McCaughan paced Asheville with four assists in the game, while Bailey had two and Barnes, Swift, Wilkins and Burris each had one. Burris matched her career-high with three steals in the game to lead Asheville, while Barnes, Wilson, Simmons, McCaughan and Wilkins each had one. Ware posted a new career-high with two blocks, while Wilson also had one.

The Bulldogs return to Kimmel Arena on Wednesday (Jan. 22) to host Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. with video, live stats, radio and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com. The game will also be locally broadcasted on CW.
