Bulldogs Ground Tornados to Close Out Non-Conference Play on Monday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball was able to ground the visiting Brevard Tornados for a 79-45 win as Dakota McCaughan tied the program's all-time single-game steals record with eight swipes in the game.

Asheville jumped out to an 8-0 lead off of two Dakota McCaughan three-pointers, before Brevard responded with five of their own. Asheville went on to close the quarter on a 13-3 run for a 21-8 lead after 10 minutes.

Asheville won the second quarter 20-5 to pull away in the game, as Asheville opened the quarter on an 8-3 run through the first four minutes. The Bulldogs closed the quarter on a 10-0 run through the final three minutes to stretch the lead to 41-15 at the half.

Asheville outscored Brevard 22-15 in the third quarter, including opening the quarter on an 11-2 run through the first four-plus minutes. Asheville stretched its lead to at least 30 in the quarter and did not let the lead dip below that mark for the remainder of the game.

Asheville shot 49.2 percent (31-63) from the field, a season-best 46.2 percent (12-26) from three-point range and 62.5 percent (5-8) from the charity stripe in the win. Asheville outscored Brevard 28-14 off turnovers, 34-14 in the paint and 26-6 on fast breaks while each team scored 12 points on second chances and Asheville added 26 points off the bench in the game. Three Bulldogs scored in double figures in the win, paced by a game-high 19 points from LaImani Simmons as she finished just two shy of tying her career-high. McCaughan added 13 points to her stat line to eclipse 500 points for her career, while Sydney Burris chipped in 11 points off the bench. Abigail Wilson and Skylar Bailey each had nine points in the game, while Taylor Wilkins added eight and Alana Swift had four. Trinity Barnes and Jazlyn Ware each contributed three points off the bench in the win. Asheville outrebounded Brevard 39-29 in the game, paced by a game-high eight boards from Burris. McCaughan and Wilson each had five rebounds in the game, while Swift, Bailey and Barnes each had four with Barnes tying her career-high. Simmons pulled down three rebounds, while Ware had two and Deborah Orianegbena also had one. McCaughan and Swift each led the offense with a game-high four assists, while Bailey had three and Simmons, Wilkins, Burris and Barnes each had two with Barnes notching a new career-high. Asheville recorded a season-high 25 steals in the game, marking the first game with 20-plus steals as a team since a 72-55 win over Charleston Southern back on Jan. 23, 2007. McCaughan's game-high eight steals mark a new career-high and also are the most in a single game by a Bulldog since Vicki Griffin in a 76-61 win over Davidson on Dec. 8, 1993. Wilson and Swift each set new career-highs with four steals in the game, while Swift tied a career-high and Burris notched a new career-high with three each. Simmons also had two swipes in the game, while Orianegbena had one. Bailey set a new career-high with two blocks, while Burris also had one.
