Wilson Notches Career-High in Conference Loss at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Abigail Wilson notched a career-high 17 points in UNC Asheville Women's Basketball's Big South Conference loss at High Point on Saturday (Jan. 4), with Asheville falling 84-53.
 
The teams played to an 8-8 deadlock through three and a half minutes, before trading buckets to end up tied at 13 with three and a half minutes to play in the period. High Point closed the first quarter on a five-point run to take an 18-13 lead to the second.
 
Asheville edged High Point 21-20 in the second quarter, closing the gap to four just past three minutes gone in the quarter. Asheville was able to rally to tie the game at 28 with four minutes to play in the half, before High Point outscored Asheville 10-6 in the remaining minutes to close out the half ahead 38-34.
 
High Point pulled away in the game in the second half, outscoring Asheville 29-7 in the third quarter and 17-12 in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score.
 
Asheville shot 39.2 percent (20-51), 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the foul line in the game while outscoring High Point 9-7 on second chances in the game. Asheville also scored 13 points off turnovers, 26 points in the paint, 10 points off fast breaks and 14 points off the bench in the game. Wilson's new career-high paced the Bulldogs, while LaImani Simmons added 12 points against her former team. Skylar Bailey contributed eight points, while Dakota McCaughan and Trinity Barnes each had four and Alana Swift and Taylor Wilkins each had three. Deborah Orianegbena also scored two points for Asheville. Asheville outrebounded High Point 30-27 in the game, paced by a team-high six boards from Simmons. Wilson pulled down five rebounds in the game, while McCaughan and Orianegbena each had four. Swift grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Bailey, Barnes and Sydney Burris each had one. McCaughan and Swift each had four assists in the game with McCaughan marking 200 for her career, while Wilkins also dished out two assists in the game. Swift paced the Bulldogs with three steals in the game, while Simmons had two and Wilson, McCaughan and Burris each had one. Orianegbena had Asheville's lone block in the game.
