Bulldogs Fall to Western Carolina on Tuesday

04.11.2023 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Western Carolina by a score of 13-4 on Tuesday night at Greenwood Field. With Tuesday's setback, Asheville moved to 18-14 on the season.

Cameron Johnson posted the lone multi-hit game for Asheville on Tuesday with a 2-for-5 day at the plate and drove in a run. Dylan Bacot scored two runs after working a pair of walks, while Robbie Burnett (1-for-4, walk) and Corbin Lanowitz (1-for-4, walk) both reached base twice as well. Despite not starting the game, Fermin Osio got on base three times with a double, a walk, and was hit by a pitch.

Asheville saw several pitchers get time on the mound on Tuesday. The trio of pitchers that fared the best were Dawson Salter, Spencer Hill, and Chris Sabo. All three pitchers tossed scoreless innings, while the duo of Hill and Sabo also struck out a pair of hitters in their respective appearances.

Western Carolina wasted little time in getting the scoring started on Tuesday. A two-run triple was followed by a successful squeeze bunt to give the Catamounts an early 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs answered by scoring single runs in each of the first four innings. WCU, however, plated four more runs in the third and another run in the fourth to make the score 8-4 Catamounts going into the middle innings.

Western Carolina scored three more runs in the sixth and tacked on one in the eighth and ninth innings to cap a 13-run performance. It marks the third straight game that Western Carolina has scored 10 or more runs in a game.

The Bulldog offense was held quiet after the fourth inning. Asheville did have a runner reach base in every inning but did not bring them around to score to try and put a dent in the WCU lead.

The Bulldogs will step back into Big South play this weekend with a three-game series against USC Upstate running Friday through Sunday. Friday's series opener is set for 5 p.m. from Greenwood Field.
