Madyson Gold Wins Asheville's First Individual Title, Bulldogs Take Second at the Low Country Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The UNC Asheville women's golf team saw history made on the final day of the Low Country Intercollegiate at Moss Creek Golf Club on Sunday (Mar. 19), with junior Madyson Gold winning the program's first ever individual tournament title. As a team, the Bulldogs finished in second place one shot behind tournament champion Quinnipiac.

The Bulldog shot 620 as a team, improving from Friday's opening round by two strokes to turn in a 309 on the day. Tournament champion Quinnipiac turned in a 317 on Friday and a 302 today to capture the title.

Gold won the individual title, the first of her career shooting a 75 (+3) in the second round and bringing her two-day total to 148 (+4). This is Gold's second consecutive two-day total under 150. Phoebe Carles turned in a 79 (+7) to finish tied for 13th, while Kayla Benge also turned in a 79 (+7) and Ally Kerr carded a 76 (+4) to finish in a tie for 17th. Venecia Zaia posted an 85 (+13) on the day, while Amber Capote turned in an 87 (+15) competing as an individual.

Gold began her day with five consecutive pars, before making bogey on No. 6 and birdie on No. 7 to remain even. She would make the turn to the back after pars on No. 8 and No. 9 to stay even on the front. She began the back nine with a par on No. 10, before making bogey on No. 11 and back-to-back pars on No. 12 and No. 13. After a bogey on No. 14, Gold responded with a birdie on No. 15 and pars on No. 16 and No. 17 before concluding her round with a double bogey on No. 18.

Carles began her day with a bogey on No. 1, before shooting par on No. 2 and bogey on No. 3. After a par on No. 4, Carles shot back-to-back bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6 before shooting par on No. 7 and No. 8. She would make the turn after a bogey on No. 9, shooting par on the back on No. 10 through No. 16. Carles concluded her day with bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18.

Benge started her day with a birdie on No. 1, before making bogey on No. 2 and No. 3. She would make par on No. 4 and No. 5, before shooting bogey on No. 6 and par on No. 7. Benge would make the turn to the back after bogeys on No. 8 and No. 9. She would start the back nine with a birdie on No. 10, before shooting par on No. 11 and No. 12 and recording a double bogey on No. 13. She would bogey No. 14 and No. 15, before making birdie on No. 16, par on No. 17 and bogey on No. 18 to conclude her round.

Kerr began her day with bogeys on No. 1 and No. 2, before making birdie on No. 3 and shooting par on the next three holes. She would make bogey on No. 7 and No. 8, before turning to the back nine with a par on No. 9. Kerr opened the back nine with a par on No. 10, before shooting bogey on No. 11 and par on No. 12. Kerr would birdie No. 13, before shooting par on No. 14 and scoring bogey on No. 15. She would conclude her round with a par on No. 16, a birdie on No. 17 and a bogey on No. 18.

"The team is getting better and more resilient every time out," said head coach Ross Cash. "We need to clean up a few things and we will be a team to be reckoned with come the conference tournament in April."
