Bulldogs cruise past UMass on Friday, 13-2

03.10.2023 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team cruised to a 13-2 win over UMass on Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field. With Friday's victory, the Bulldogs improved to 9-4 on the season, which is the team's best 13-game start to a season in program history.

Asheville pounded out 13 hits on Friday vs. UMass, which is the second-most by the Bulldogs this season. The Bulldogs had production up-and-down their lineup on Friday but a lot of production was found at the top of the order. Ty Kaufman (3-for-5, three runs scored, three RBI) and Robbie Burnett (3-for-5, two runs scored, four RBI) combined for six hits and seven RBI in the top two spots of Asheville's batting order. Corbin Lanowitz (three RBI) and Cameron Johnson (home run, two RBI) both drove in multiple runs and Michael Groves had a two-hit game as well for the Bulldogs.

Clay Edmondson logged his fourth straight win to begin the 2023 campaign on Friday. The sophomore right-hander pitched seven innings, allowed one run on seven hits and struck seven hitters. Nick Bruno also pitched a scoreless inning of relief coming out of the bullpen for Asheville.

Following a scoreless first inning, Asheville jumped UMass for five runs in the second inning. A leadoff single by Groves was followed by a RBI singles from Tony Castonguay and Kaufman to give Asheville the early advantage. Before the Minutemen could get out of the inning, RBI doubles from Burnett and Lanowitz staked Edmondson to a 5-0 lead.

After Asheville scored a run in the fourth to make the score 6-0, the Bulldogs would tack on four more runs in the sixth. The big hit in the inning was a two-run home run from Johnson.
Asheville would push three more runs across in the seventh to put more separation between itself and UMass on its way to the 13-2 win.

Edmondson's stellar outing on the mound was boosted by the defense from Asheville. The Bulldogs did not make an error on Friday and had a couple stellar plays in the field. One of those was a sliding catch by Burnett in the eighth to prevent an extra base hit for UMass.

The Bulldogs and Minutemen will return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Greenwood Field. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. and game two will begin roughly 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Both games, which will feature free admission courtesy of Ingles, are scheduled to air on ESPN+.
