Asheville sweeps a doubleheader from UMass on Saturday

03.11.2023 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team swept a doubleheader against UMass on Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field. Asheville won game one by a score of 10-3 before finishing off the day with a 7-3 victory. With the pair of victories, the Bulldogs move to 11-4 on the season. The 11-4 record not only marks the fastest a Bulldog team has reached double figures in wins but also the program's best 15-game start to a season in program history.

Game One Recap – Asheville's offense was clicking well in the first game of the day on Saturday. The Bulldogs totaled a season-high 17 hits and every member of the starting lineup recorded at least one hit and six players had multi-hit days.

Drew Bristow drove in a career-high five runs, while Cameron Johnson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored to lead the way for Asheville's offense. Dylan Bacot scored three times, hit a two-run home run on a 2-for-4 outing at the plate.

The offensive explosion by Asheville was more than enough run support for the Bulldog pitchers. Ryan Douglas got the start and improved to 3-0 on the season. Douglas worked around five walks and three hits to allow two runs in five innings of work to go with eight strikeouts. Blake Little followed Douglas and took the ball the rest of the way for a rare four-inning save. Little allowed one run on three hits to go with a strikeout.

Game Two Recap – In the final game of the series, Asheville continued to swing the bats well. The Bulldogs used a six-run second inning to power themselves to a fourth straight series win to start the 2023 campaign.

Robbie Burnett, Corbin Lanowitz, and Sam Gallardo all had two hits for Asheville in game two. Bacot recorded arguably the biggest hit of the game in the six-run second with a three-run double to extend Asheville's lead early on to 6-0.

On the mound, Justin Honeycutt picked up his third victory of the season to improve to 3-0 after tossing five innings, allowing one run on three hits to go with three strikeouts. After the Minutemen cut the Bulldog lead to 6-3 in the seventh, Brett Johnson and Dawson Salter came in and stopped their rally there and the Bulldogs notched their third sweep of the season with the 7-3 win.

Next Up – The Bulldogs will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday when they visit Queens University of Charlotte in their last game before conference play begins next weekend. First pitch between the Bulldogs and Royals is set for 6 p.m.
