12.09.2023 | Women's Basketball
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball extended its win streak in the Mountain Rivalry with a 59-48 win at Western Carolina on Saturday (Dec. 9).
Asheville built a 17-11 lead through one quarter, jumping out to an 8-2 lead through two minutes with a bucket from Mallory Bruce and triples from Jaila Lee and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter. The teams battled to a 10-10 deadlock, before Asheville re-gained a lead with back-to-back scoring possessions from Brooks-Sumpter. An old-fashioned three-point play from Brooks-Sumpter inside the final minute of the quarter was how the Bulldogs ended the first quarter.
Asheville extended its lead with a three-pointer from LaImani Simmons just past the first minute of the second quarter, before Western Carolina battled back to take a 23-22 lead at the halfway point of the quarter. Western built a six-point lead with 2:45 to play in the half, before Asheville battled back to within two in the final minute with two consecutive buckets from Simmons, with Western taking a 30-28 lead to the half.
Asheville would clamp down defensively in the third quarter, holding Western to just seven points while putting 20 of their own on the board in the period. After Western tied the game at 33 three minutes into the quarter, Asheville would outscore Western 14-4 in the final seven minutes of the third quarter to take a 48-37 lead to the fourth.
Western would cut into the Asheville lead in the first two minutes of the fourth, getting back within four. Asheville would extend its lead into double digits with three and a half minutes to play in the game, holding the lead there until the final horn.
The Bulldogs shot 29.2 percent (19-65), 46.2 percent (6-13) from three-point range and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the charity stripe in the win. Asheville outscored Western 25-12 off turnovers, 12-5 on second chances, 11-8 on fast breaks and 28-9 off the bench in the win. Simmons set a new career-high with a game-high 20 points, while Brooks-Sumpter added 17 points and Jaila Lee also had 11. Jamaya Blanks added five points, while Mallory Bruce and Dakota McCaughan each had three points in the game. Asheville out-rebounded Western 41-35 in the game, led by six rebounds each from Brooks-Sumpter, Lee and Bruce.
