Women's Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Battle at East Tennessee State Thursday Night

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped a hard-fought battle at East Tennessee State Thursday night (Dec. 14) by a score of 60-51.

ETSU jumped out to leads of 8-2 and 13-4 in the early going of the first quarter, before Asheville would rally with three straight scoring possessions and scores from Nycerra Minnis, LaImani Simmons, Jamaya Blanks and Simmons again to get back within two with three minutes to play in the period. After back-to-back ETSU scores, Abigail Wilson would close the first quarter with a corner three to get Asheville back within 19-18 headed to the second.

Neither team scored until the final three and a half minutes in the second quarter, with ETSU building its lead back up to seven. Millie Brown knocked down a corner three to get Asheville back within four, before the Bucs would ultimately take a 27-21 lead to the half.

The deficit fluctuated for most of the third quarter, before Asheville would string a few scoring possessions together to cut the deficit to two with 1:32 to play in the period. ETSU stretched their lead back to five with the last bucket of the frame, taking a 42-37 lead to the fourth.

Asheville used some scoring momentum to cut the lead to one with six and a half minutes to play, before a three-pointer from Simmons would give Asheville a 46-44 lead with six minutes to play. After playing to a 47-47 deadlock with 4:53 to play, ETSU rebuilt a seven-point lead with to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 31.3 percent (20-64), 23.8 percent (5-21) from long range and 40.0 percent (6-15) from the charity stripe in the game. Asheville also outscored ETSU 12-3 off turnovers and 28-3 off the bench in the game, while scoring 18 points in the paint, nine points off second chances and four points off fast breaks. Simmons paced Asheville with a team-high 15 points in the game, along with nine from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter who eclipsed 500 points in an Asheville uniform in the game. Mallory Bruce added eight points in the game, while Jamaya Blanks had seven and Minnis had four. Brown and Wilson each had three points in the game, while Jaila Lee also had two. Brooks-Sumpter led the way with seven rebounds for Asheville, while Simmons and Lee each had five and Minnis, Briauna Thompson and Dakota McCaughan each had three. Bruce and Blanks each had two boards in the game, while Wilson and Faith Adams also had one. McCaughan and Brown each had two assists in the game for Asheville, while Brooks-Sumpter, Lee and Adams each had one. Simmons had two steals in the game, while Bruce also had one. Also of note was Adams playing in her 120th career game in an Asheville uniform.
