Women's Basketball Falls in Tight Non-Conference Matchup with North Carolina Central

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell in a 65-63 non-conference matchup with North Carolina Central inside Kimmel Arena Monday afternoon (Dec. 18).
Asheville jumped out to a 10-2 lead through four minutes in the first quarter, before extending the lead to 15-5 with three and a half minutes to play in the period. North Carolina Central would cut into the lead, getting within as few as four before Asheville took a 20-14 lead to the second.
North Carolina Central battled throughout the first few minutes of the second quarter, tying the game at 24 about four minutes into the period. North Carolina Central would push its lead to five, before a tip-in at the buzzer by McKinley Brooks-Sumpter sent the teams to the break with the Eagles leading 33-30.
The teams played to a 36-36 deadlock in the first three minutes of the third quarter, before later playing to a 41-41 tie. North Carolina Central built a five-point lead with just over three minutes to play in the quarter, before Asheville rallied to take the lead a minute later. North Carolina Central scored last in the quarter, taking a 48-47 lead to the fourth.
North Carolina Central re-built a three-point lead in the first few minutes, before Millie Brown knocked down a huge triple to tie the game at 54. North Carolina Central would establish a lead again late, with the comeback effort for Asheville falling just short.
Asheville shot 38.2 percent (26-68) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-13) from long range and just 40.0 percent (6-15) from the foul line in the game. Asheville also outscored North Carolina Central 14-12 off turnovers, 38-28 in the paint, 17-6 on second chances and 30-13 off the bench in the game. LaImani Simmons led the way with a game-high 17 points, with Mallory Bruce also scoring 12 points in the game. Brooks-Sumpter added 11 points in the game, while Jaila Lee had 10. Abigail Wilson contributed eight points in the game, along with three from Brown and Jamaya Blanks also had two. Blanks led the way on the glass matching her career-high with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Lee pulled down seven rebounds in the game. Brooks-Sumpter had five boards in the game, while Simmons and Wilson each had three and Bruce and Nycerra Minnis each had two. Brown, Faith Adams and Dakota McCaughan each had one rebound in the game. Brooks-Sumpter dished out a game-high four assists for Asheville, while Blanks, Simmons, Bruce, Brown and McCaughan each had one helper in the game. McCaughan led the way with a game-high four steals in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Lee and Wilson each had one.
