Bulldogs Grind Out 72-71 Thriller over UNC Greensboro

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball hosted UNC Greensboro inside Kimmel Arena Thursday afternoon (Dec. 21), winning a 72-71 thriller.
The teams went back and forth through a fast-paced high-scoring first quarter, as UNCG led 13-8 three minutes in. The Spartans built a six-point lead with under four minutes to play in the quarter, before Asheville would get back within one to end the quarter at 24-23.
Asheville regained the lead and held it for several minutes in the second quarter, before the teams played to a 32-32 deadlock with just over five minutes to play in the half. The teams continued their back and forth style through the final few minutes, as Asheville led 40-38 at the break.
The teams went back and forth through the first few minutes of the third quarter, with UNCG being the first to 50 in the game. Asheville would battle to tie the game at 57 with 1:13 to play in the quarter, before Asheville would hold UNCG to just one free throw and take a 62-58 lead to the fourth.
The teams played to a 62-62 deadlock through a minute and a half in the fourth quarter, before trading baskets to lock up at 69 with 2:37 to play in the game. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter scored a 15-foot jumper with 36 seconds to play to tie the game at 71, before Asheville would have the biggest possession with just seconds remaining. Jaila Lee drove to the bucket and drew a foul with one second left, knocking down her second free throw to put the Bulldogs ahead for good and seal the victory.
Asheville shot 51.0 percent (26-51) from the floor, 41.2 percent (7-17) from beyond the arc and 61.9 percent (13-21) from the charity stripe in the win. Asheville outscored UNCG 20-11 off turnovers and 41-8 off the bench in the win. LaImani Simmons led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Brooks-Sumpter had 13 points to eclipse 700 for her career and Mallory Bruce had 11 points. Jaila Lee had eight points, while Abigail Wilson had seven, Faith Adams had five and Jamaya Blanks also had four. Nycerra Minnis, Dakota McCaughan and Mille Brown each had three points in the game. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds in the game, while Lee had four and Bruce, Wilson and Blanks also had two. Blanks dished out four assists in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter had three and Simmons had two. Lee, Bruce, Adams and McCaughan each had one helper in the game. Lee also tied a career-high with three steals in the game.
