Bulldogs Roll Past Brevard in Final Game of 2023

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball rolled past Brevard Friday night (Dec. 29) by a score of 72-34, allowing the fewest points in a game since last year's season opener against Converse on Nov. 7, 2022 (79-25).
The Bulldogs were able to grind out a low-scoring first quarter coming away with a 12-8 lead, before clamping down defensively in the second quarter and outscoring Brevard 22-0 for a 34-8 halftime lead.
Asheville won the third quarter 21-12, before winning the fourth quarter 17-14 to bring the game to its final score.
Asheville shot 41.7 percent (30-72) from the floor, 19.2 percent (5-26) from long range and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Brevard 25-10 off turnovers, 48-8 in the paint, 18-4 on second chances, 9-3 on fast breaks and 30-10 off the bench in the win. Asheville was led by a career-high 17 points from Jaila Lee with career-highs in both field goals made and attempted (8-15), while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter posted 14 points and season-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Mallory Bruce finished with eight points, while LaImani Simmons chipped in seven and Abigail Wilson and Taylor Wilkins each had six. Trinity Fields posted a career-high five points, while Nycerra Minnis, Dakota McCaughan and Jamaya Blanks each had three points in the game. In addition to Brooks-Sumpter's rebounding effort, Blanks pulled down eight while Lee had six on the night. Bruce grabbed five rebounds, while Minnis had four and Simmons, Wilson, Wilkins and McCaughan each had two. Fields, Faith Adams and Millie Brown each had one rebound in the game. Wilkins tied her career-high in assists with four, while Lee, Simmons and Adams each had three in the game and Fields and Brown each had one. Lee tied her career-high with three steals in the game, while Brown had two and Wilkins, Adams, Wilson, McCaughan and Bruce each had one. Brooks-Sumpter and Blanks each recorded blocks in the game for Asheville, while Fields also logged a career-high in minutes in the game with 11.
