Women's Basketball Drops Conference Opener at USC Upstate Wednesday Night

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball dropped its Big South Conference opener at USC Upstate Wednesday night (Jan. 3) by a score of 71-44.

The teams played to a 6-6 deadlock through five minutes, before Upstate went ahead by four over the next two minutes. Asheville would rally for a 14-13 lead with just over a minute to go in the period with back-to-back three-pointers from Dakota McCaughan and a bucket from Mallory Bruce, before Upstate would rally to take an 18-14 lead to the second.

Upstate increased their lead to eight in the early goings of the second quarter, before Asheville got back within four with under a minute to play in the half. The Spartans would take a 29-24 lead to the break.

Upstate outscored Asheville 19-11 in the third quarter and 23-9 in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 23.9 percent (16-67) from the floor, 10.7 percent (3-28) from long range and 60.0 percent (9-15) from the foul line in the game. Asheville also outscored Upstate 22-18 off turnovers and 11-8 on second McCaughan led the Bulldogs with 10 points, while Faith Adams registered a season-high nine points in the contest. Bruce had seven points in the game, while McKinley Brooks-Sumpter had six and Jamaya Blanks and Abigail Wilson each had four. Jaila Lee and Briauna Thompson also each had two points in the game. Bruce finished with a game-high nine rebounds to lead Asheville on the glass, while Lee finished one off her career high with eight in the game. Brooks-Sumpter pulled down five rebounds in the game, while Wilson also had four and Nycerra Minnis had three, with Wilson eclipsing 400 rebounds for her career. Blanks, Thompson and McCaughan each grabbed two rebounds in the game. Bruce dished out two assists in the game, while Lee also had one. LaImani Simmons led the way with two steals, while Lee, Brooks-Sumpter and Bruce each had one. Minnis and Wilson each posted two blocks in the game, while Lee also had one. Wilson also played in her 100th game in an Asheville uniform, joining Adams (124) as the most recent Bulldogs to eclipse the century mark in games played with the program.

The Bulldogs return home to host Presbyterian on Saturday (Jan. 6) in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena, with video, live stats and audio available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
