Late Offense lifts Winthrop past Asheville

05.19.2022 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Winthrop used an eight-run eighth inning to power past the UNC Asheville baseball team Thursday night at Greenwood Field by a score of 16-10. The loss moves Asheville's record to 18-27-1 and 12-9-1 in Big South play.

A highlight for Asheville on Thursday was its flash of power. The Bulldogs launched a season-high four home runs against the Eagles on the day. Two of those long balls came off the bat of Michael Groves as he also finished with four RBI. Robbie Burnett came through with a three-run blast in the fourth, and Cameron Johnson added a two-run shot of his own in the sixth.

Overall, eight Bulldog pitchers saw action on the mound on Thursday. Zeus Ponder got the starting nod and threw two scoreless innings. Dawson Salter did the same, allowing two hits and picked up a strikeout, while Isaac Gonzales tossed a scoreless ninth inning for Asheville.

Things looked good for the Bulldogs early on. A throwing error by Winthrop chased in the first run of the game, followed by a two-run home run by Groves to make it 3-0 Asheville. The Eagles hit a two-run home run of their own to cut into the Bulldog lead, 3-2.

Burnett and Groves both hit home runs in the fourth inning to build the Asheville lead out to six runs, 8-2.

Winthrop, however, rebounded with a six-run fifth to tie the score at 8-8. Johnson's two-run home run in the sixth gave Asheville its lead back to 10-8. The Eagles came back in the eighth, scoring eight times on six hits, and were aided by three Bulldog errors to seize the momentum and lead 16-10, which was the final score.

The Bulldogs and Eagles will resume the series on Friday afternoon. The first pitch time for that contest is set for 3 p.m. from Greenwood Field.
