Baseball hosts rival Winthrop to close out the regular season

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will close out its regular season this week by hosting longtime rival Winthrop for a three-game series at Greenwood Field. All three games can be watched on ESPN+, while Saturday's tilt can also be seen locally on CW62.

Asheville ranks third in double plays per game (1.09) and seventh in overall double plays turned (49). Senior Sendoff – Prior to Saturday's game, the Bulldogs will honor their seven seniors. The seven Bulldogs that will be playing their final game at Greenwood Field are Kevin Catrine, Chris Banks, JP Perez, Wade Chandler, PJ Heintz, Jacob Edwards, and Dominic Freeberger.
Push for the Postseason – Both the Bulldogs and Eagles are looking to shore up their respective postseason hopes this week. Asheville currently sits third in the league standings with its 12-8-1 conference record, while Winthrop enters the final series tied for fifth place with a 10-11 mark. The top six teams in the league standings will advance to the 2022 Big South Baseball Tournament on May 25-28 at Truist Point, the home of the High Point Rockers in High Point, N.C. If Asheville can stay in third place, it'll match the best finish in program history, matching the seasons by the Bulldogs in 1989, 1990, and 1998.
About Winthrop – Winthrop brings a season-high four-game winning streak with it to Greenwood Field. The Eagles, who defeated The Citadel once and swept North Carolina A&T last weekend, are led by one of the top home run hitters in the Big South in Dillon Morton. Morton ranks second in the league with 14 home runs to go along with a .311 batting average and 45 RBI.
Series Rewind vs. Winthrop – The all-time series between Asheville and Winthrop is one of the longest for both programs, as the series consists of over 100 meetings since the first clash back in 1985.
