Asheville and USC Upstate ends in a 5-5 tie
05.15.2022 | Baseball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team and USC Upstate endured a five-hour lightning/rain delay to begin the day before the series finale was called in the top of the tenth inning due to lightning. The Bulldogs move to 18-26-1 overall and 12-8-1 in Big South play with Sunday's result. Sunday's tie marked just the third tie in program history and the first since 1990.
Ty Kaufman and Tylan Reece led the way for Asheville with two hits apiece in the series finale. Robbie Burnett, Kohl Abrams, and PJ Heintz also tallied hits in the contest.
On the mound, senior Jacob Edwards gave the Bulldogs yet another stellar start going 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits to go with five strikeouts. With his five strikeouts, Edwards becomes the seventh Bulldog pitcher to reach the 200-strikeout mark and the first to do so since 2012, when Ryan Dull joined the club.
There were not many offensive chances early in Sunday's game between either team. Upstate used a bit of small ball to manufacture the game's first run. A leadoff double off the first base bag was followed by back-to-back bunts to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Asheville promptly answered back in the top of the fifth. Heintz got the Bulldogs into the hit column with a double down the left field line to get a rally started. Reece followed with an RBI triple in the right-center field gap to score Heintz to tie the score at 1-1.
Upstate got another runner to second base in the bottom of the seventh, which led to the departure of Edwards in favor of reliever Dawson Salter with one out. Salter did a great job stranding that runner at second base to keep the game tied.
Reece struck again in the top of the eighth with a one-out double. Corbin Lanowitz drew a walk before Kaufman came through with a clutch RBI single to score Reece to give Asheville its first lead of the contest, 2-1. Burnett then came through with a two-run triple to score both Lanowitz and Kaufman to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth inning.
After a scoreless inning from Blake Little in the eighth, Asheville added an insurance run in the ninth. Abrams got things started with a double. Heintz was intentionally walked, and Wade Chandler worked a walk to load the bases. Kaufman came through again with an RBI single up the middle to score Abrams to make it 5-1 Bulldogs heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Upstate would battle back, scoring four times on three hits to go along with two walks and a hit by a pitch to tie the game at 5-5 to force extra innings.
The game got one out into the tenth inning before another lightning delay caused the two coaching staffs and umpires to call Sunday's game a 5-5 tie.
Asheville will return home to wrap up the regular season with a three-game home series vs. Winthrop. The series between the Bulldogs and Eagles is set to begin on Thursday at 5 p.m.
