Bulldogs drop the series finale at Mercer on Sunday
03.06.2022 | Baseball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer used 10 runs and 13 hits to power itself to a 10-0 win over the UNC Asheville baseball team on Sunday afternoon. The loss moves Asheville's record on the 2022 season to 3-9.
Mercer's pitching staff held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the second straight game on Sunday. Asheville was limited to four hits in the contest. Dylan Bacot, who had a double to account for the lone extra-base hit for the Bulldogs, and Dominic Freeberger each started the game and picked up hits. Freshmen Brock Mercado and Hunter Fryzowicz also registered hits, which marked the first collegiate hits for those two players.
The Bears wasted little time jumping on Asheville as they scored two runs in the opening inning. After adding another run in the second to make the score 3-0, Mercer blew the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs to extend its lead to 10-0.
Despite Asheville keeping the Bears off the scoreboard after the fifth, it did not have any answers offensively to spark a comeback, and Mercer finished off the 10-0 victory.
Bryce Fisher, who made his third start of the season, was tagged with the loss dropping his record to 0-2. Overall, seven Bulldogs saw time on the mound on Sunday. Brett Johnson, Jacob Williams, Spencer Hill, and Zeus Ponder all logged scoreless appearances in the contest.
Asheville will be back in action on Tuesday when it welcomes High Point to Greenwood Field. The first pitch for that contest is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
