BLACKSBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville baseball team hung with Virginia Tech well early in the middle game of their three-game series to open the 2022 season on Saturday. However, four runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth powered the Hokies' 8-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
A day after Virginia Tech scored 17 runs on 22 hits, Asheville starting pitcher Jacob Edwards gave the Bulldogs a stellar start. The senior lefthander worked the first five innings yielded just one run (not earned) on five hits to go with eight strikeouts.
Once Edwards left the game in the sixth, Virginia Tech's offense started to gain steam against the Bulldog bullpen. A run-scoring single and a three-run home run chased reliever Brett Johnson from the game and boosted VT's lead to 5-0.
Asheville cracked the scoreboard in the eighth. Ty Kaufman led the inning off with a walk before Corbin Lanowitz singled to centerfield to give Asheville a pair of runners on for just the second time in the contest. A pair of wild pitches scored Kaufman to get the Bulldogs back with four, 5-1, heading to the bottom of the eighth.
After scoreless appearances from Cole Bates and Justin Honeycutt, VT tacked on three more runs in the eighth thanks to a solo home run and a two-run double against Bulldog newcomer Chris Sabo to put the game out of reach, 8-1. Dawson Salter did toss a scoreless eighth inning on just 12 pitches.
Asheville's offense was limited to four hits on Saturday from four Virginia Tech pitchers. Cam Johnson went 1-for-3 with a walk, while Kevin Catrine reached base twice with a single and was hit by a pitch. Robbie Burnett (1-for-1) and Lanowitz (1-for-2) accounted for the other base hits for Asheville.
The Bulldogs and Hokies will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m., and the game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
