Bulldogs Drop Non-Conference Contest at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team dropped its non-conference contest at Austin Peay on Wednesday (Dec. 21) by a score of 64-51.
The teams went back and forth through the first few minutes, before Asheville rattled off back-to-back buckets from Jamaya Blanks to go ahead 9-4. Asheville's final points of the frame came off a long ball from Dakota McCaughan, as the Bulldogs took a 12-9 lead to the second quarter.
The Bulldogs stretched their lead to six early in the second quarter, before Austin Peay battled back to tie the game at 15 two minutes into the period. The Bulldogs maintained a lead for the remainder of the quarter, ultimately taking a 24-22 lead to the break.
Austin Peay would rally in the third quarter to ultimately take a five-point lead to the fourth. The Governors took a six-point lead part way through the frame, before the Bulldogs would rally to tie the game at 32 with just over four minutes to play in the period. After Asheville tied the game again with under two minutes to play in the frame, Austin Peay scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 39-35
lead to the fourth.
The Bulldogs battled through the fourth quarter seeing the deficit fluctuate but were never able to turn the tide in the period.
McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the game, while Blanks registered a career-high 12 and McCaughan also added 11 points. Jordaynia Ivie added six points in the game, while Abigail Wilson had five and Faith Adams scored three. McCaughan led the rebounding effort for Asheville, tying a career-high with six. Brooks-Sumpter also pulled down five rebounds in the game, while Blanks also had four. Mallory Bruce and Nycerra Minnis each had two rebounds in the game, while Ivie, Wilson, Adams and Jamia Blake each had one. McCaughan and Ivie each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Bruce and Adams each had two and Blanks also had one. Ivie, Bruce, Adams and Brooks-Sumpter each registered two steals in the game, while McCaughan also had one. Minnis posted the lone block in the game for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Thursday, Dec. 29 to start Big South Conference play on the road at Radford. Tip-off is set for 2:00 from Carilion Court at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
